"Romney's answer is a bit confusing, because 200,000 is included in the universe of numbers less than 250,000. If you take the statement at face value, however, it appears that Romney is using the same upper limit as President Barack Obama when it comes to middle-income earners. Obama's proposed tax hike for the richest Americans begins with taxable income over $250,000.
Because of Romney's wording, some interpreted the statement as saying the middle-income range begins at $200,000, touching off the usual hand-wringing over Romney being out of touch with the non-wealthy."
So based upon your thread title, please direct the rest of us to exactly where Romney spoke the words, "Middle class begins at $200 to $250k".

Hard to gauge living in RI ... with our in the toilet economy.
However ... I would think $150,000 around here puts you in middle class.
Perhaps the $200,000 in the Boston area and $250,000 in the NY City area.
What do you think about those numbers?
How can one number represent the entire country?

One number can't, 250 K is a long way from the US household average of 50K. I think 150K would put you in the top 5%. How can the top 5% be considered the average e.g.the middle.

That's what i am having a hard time with ....
I've never considered middle class as wealthy though I am sure many in this country would. Would be so much easier to eliminate the long form and just have 4 tax categories and go from there ... keep the each child deduction then:
50K - 100K - Below Middle Class
100K - 150K - Lower Middle Class.
150K - 250K - Middle Class
+250K ... Upper Middle Class to rich
Now put rates on each of those ..........

This may be off topic but come next year, there are two sacred deductions that they may review and reduce/eliminate, child deduction and mortgage interest/taxes.....It's just a matter or time when it joins Social Security as no longer being " the third rail".......Gonna happen......No matter WHO gets elected.
