The story of Sam Bacile's film "Innocence of Muslims" gets curiouser and curiouser. It more and more appears that the film was the work of radical Christians who were perhaps trying to sow conflict between Jews and Muslims. The evidence is still sketchy, but is beginning to point in that direction, and will be curious to see how it unfolds.
Now, of course the radical Muslim crowd was absolutely responsible for the harm done, but really the radical Christians cannot wash their hands completely of responsibility. What is the point of making this film, except to provoke anger in a part of the world that has more difficulty than we do controlling its religious extremists?

"Nakoula (a convicted felon for bank fraud) told the AP that he was a Coptic Christian and said the film's director supported the concerns of Christian Copts about their treatment by Muslims.

"The AP located Bacile after obtaining his cell phone number from Morris Sadek, a conservative Coptic Christian in the U.S. who had promoted the anti-Muslim film in recent days on his website."
The film was produced by Media for Christ, and portrays Muhammed in perverse ways:
Movie that set off violence in Middle East produced by Southern California nonprofit - The Willits News
"An inflammatory anti-Muslim film that has been blamed in this week's deadly attack on U.S. diplomats in Libya was produced by a Duarte-based Christian non-profit, officials said.
"Media for Christ, which has its administrative offices south of the 210 Freeway in Duarte, took out a film permit for the production, according to City Manager Darryl George.

"The film negatively portrays the prophet Mohammed as a sex-obsessed, bisexual who thrives on acts of sadistic violence. Several scenes are fairly pornographic including one which appears to depict Mohammed engaged in oral sex."
The filmmaker was probably not Jewish and the film involved anti-Muslim evangelicals:
Muhammad-Film Consultant: 'Sam Bacile' Is Not Israeli, and Not a Real Name - Jeffrey Goldberg - The Atlantic
"As part of my search for more information about Sam Bacile, the alleged producer of the now-infamous anti-Muhammad film trailer "The Innocence of Muslims," I just called a man named Steve Klein -- a self-described militant Christian activist in Riverside, California (whose actual business, he said, is in selling "hard-to-place home insurance"), who has been described in multiple media accounts as a consultant to the film.
"Klein told me that Bacile, the producer of the film, is not Israeli, and most likely not Jewish, as has been reported, and that the name is, in fact, a pseudonym."

'Nobody is anything but an active American citizen. They're from Syria, Turkey, Pakistan, they're some that are from Egypt. Some are Copts but the vast majority are Evangelical.'"
Radical Christian Islamophobe Terry Jones has been promoting the film:
Ambassador, three staffers killed after film, 'trial' backed by Gainesville pastor Terry Jones spark unrest in Libya, Egypt - Tampa Bay Times
Jones and other backers of the film, Muhammad, were unapologetic about the role they may have had in triggering the violence.
"The fact that angry protesters climbed the wall at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo today, ripped down the American flag and tore it apart further indicates the lack of respect that Islam has for any other religion, any other flag, any freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of religion," Jones said Tuesday in a statement released before the death in Benghazi was confirmed. "It further illustrates that they have no tolerance for anything outside of Mohammad."
The filmmaker obviously knew what he was doing wrong, for he deceived his cast and overdubbed the film with new lines:
Who is Sam Bacile? Questions swirl around identity of filmmaker - CNN.com
"An actress in the film, who asked not to be identified, said the original script did not include a Prophet Mohammed character. She said she and other actors complained that their lines had been changed.
...
"The actress said the character of Mohammed in the movie was named George when it was shot, and that after production wrapped she returned and read other lines that may have been dubbed into the piece.
"A member of the production staff who worked on the film and has a copy of the original script corroborated the woman's account. There was no mention of Mohammed or Islam, the crew member said."
