Default Contest Results

Since someone scored over 10 points, we are declaring winners in the contest:

Titus--3 day suspension
Wolfpack--2 day suspension
Illegal--1 day suspension

The suspensions start tomorrow. Remember, these are voluntary suspensions, but if you don't respect this honor system, we will take much firmer action. Titus you cannot participate in the forum M, T, and W. Wolfpack, M and T, and Illegal, M.

Also, please note that the moderators are still banning people from threads, issuing infractions, and taking other steps to keep the board reasonably sane. Given how heated this political season is, we will enforce the rules more vigorously. The contest should be seen as supplementing moderation, not replacing it.

A personal attack is that which offends someone by
(1) calling them a name or implying something negative about them
(2) baiting them or teasing them repeatedly.
(3) repeatedly making fun of something you know about them,
(4) intentionally using wording in a way that you should reasonably know will offend them personally. (For example, singling out someone who we have learned is obese by constantly using expressions like 'fat of the land' would be a personal attack.)

Given that it's largely the same people who make the attacks, I think everyone knows what a personal attack is. The strength of a personal attack is obviously subjective, but here are some examples:

(1) In the context of the contest, this is not a personal attack,: "Haven't posted much here but does anyone else find it strange that a Husband and Wife are posting to each other?"
(2) This is an 0.5 point personal attack: "Your misogyny is showing, rape is about violence. not about sex."
(3) This is a 1 point personal attack: "The fact that you have to come up with this idiotic example does nothing but demonstrate the intellectual bankruptcy of the point you are feebly trying to make."
(4) This is a 1.5 point personal attack: "David is a miserable b1tch."
(5) This is a 2 point personal attack: "Thank you, Dr. Mengele" (and would have been higher if we were more certain that the poster's comments were intentionally directed at Jewish forum members.)

If "discipline" is supposed to be corrective and progressive, this system obviously is not working...

So after all the name calling, racism, misogyny and anti semitism.. this is the results over a two week period, imo this board has not gotten more civil, if anything less so.

Yes, this was a bad two weeks, perhaps because of the heat of the convention. But, we are back to using the other tools at our disposal as well. We'll see if it helps.

Hopefully, being called a "f'in twit" seems to have born no consequence, and if there was one it did not modify behavior..

I can't believe this.See what your side has done? Wouldn't it just be a hell of a lot easier to post what you can say?
I mean can't you mods use some common sense here?
Kind of like the judge who said "I know porn when I see it."
But of course its the ones on you know which side that need central planners to tell the difference.

i mean you don't play football with out a helmet. Why would you come to a poly forum and not expect heated exchange.
I mean grow the hell up.
Personally I don't want anyone banned from either side.
I mean some of things that some people pretend to go into shock trauma about are in newspapers everyday. Funny all the shock trauma seems to come when their losing an argument. This forum takes more dives than the Montreal Canadians....ooh I hope thats not a point against me.

Patra, a few of us were here before we had rules. What happened was that the forum got so nasty that people quit patsfans.com. Ian was ready to close the forum down, so we proposed having rules and moderators, which would try to keep the forum tame enough to not alienate patsfans.com members. Ian embraced that idea and made it happen. Our approach to moderation from the beginning has been to protect patsfans.com, not to be a finishing school for political discourse!

Are you suggesting re-education camp to.. uuuhumm.. modify behavior?

As far as consequences go. I heeded the mods request, and thats all I'm going to do by the way.

could you hold off on deciding for a minute.......I want to post all the instances where Darryl and Diver refer to Republicans or the Right (the citizens, not the politicians) in a negative way. Although it does not insult a person by name, it does an effective job at insulting several people by calling them out in one message. So if there is one post that makes a reference to someone on the right in an insulting way, that post should be 0.5 times the number of people to Darryls right that it insulted. which probably puts Darryl and diver in 1st pace with a single post.

Or are you simply going to ignore this because it came from the left. I have requested this before, and you have ignored it even though it is real.

Also, are we really going to do the math based on every time Darryl feels he was insulted? is there no follow up to the complaint posted? Or do I, after my suspension, have to post EVERY post that Darryl posts that is insulting to a person who is on the right......every time he insults a person because they have money?

what's it gonna be, boy?

Also, I would like to see the posts that decided my score.

As a matter of fact how about if these frivolous complaints are indeed found to be frivolous the points go against him...maybe this will "modify his behavior."
