Re: Leftist hate terrorist shoots guard at family research council.
While it may very well turn out to be that this was a hate crime or domestic terrorism - it does seem that Fox is jumping the gun.
From the Fox story:
Quote:
|
A source told Fox News Channel that the suspect “made statements regarding their policies, and then opened fire with a gun striking a security guard.” The FBI is treating the shooting as a case of domestic terrorism.

From most everywhere else:
Quote:
While Fox News claimed sources said the gunman “expressed disagreement with the conservative group’s policy positions,” two FBI officials cautioned reporters that early eyewitness accounts are often inaccurate and said it was too early to speak to the suspect’s motivation.
The unnamed suspect, described by one witness who saw him in handcuffs as a middle-aged man, is currently in custody and being interviewed by authorities. Officials from the Metropolitan Police Department; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and the FBI are on the scene.
Authorities are looking into the suspect’s motivations in order to determine whether to treat the incident as domestic terrorism, FBI spokeswoman Jacqueline Maguire told reporters. If it is not domestic terrorism, the case will likely be handled by MPD (though federal prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney’s would still handle the prosecution).

Some good advice from Slate:
Quote:
1) Don't assume any hate group connections or political motivations until we find out more about the witness. You don't want to wind up like Brian Ross.
2) Do keep track of how the shooting's being politicized. I say "how," because it's inevitable, and in some cases it's not all that bad. You won't hear the NRA bemoan the mental health/gun buying law passed after the Virginia Tech shooting.

The Family Research Council Shooting and "Hate Groups"
I'm also a little curious.....from what Fox reports, it was an issue of gay rights and/or gay marriage - why does that automatically equate "leftist" in the minds of posters here? Is that an acknowledgement that gays are not made to feel welcome in the "righties" world and therefore, would never be part of the conservative world? I believe there is a group of gay republicans, isn't there? I also believe that nutcases with guns can be, simply, nutcases with guns - and without political affiliation.
Patrad, Harry, WP, why your rush to make this guy a "leftie?"
