He's right, actually. To me the fact that First Ladies don't get paid is an artifact of an era when women were expected to be homemakers. Obviously, all our first ladies in memory have worked really hard. Why aren't they paid?

Wonder if pf looked at it, since it explodes the right wing lie that Michelle Obama had the largest number of staff, when several others had more or the same amount, including Laura Bush.

At any rate, while she doesn't official perform any official duties, the reality is that her time is not her own. She's always representing the United States, and as a result like other first ladies is involved in a lot of good works.

She is not an elected official. She is not appointed or hired... Where would be the justification in paying her a salary?

I think she does a lot of work. I could see cutting the Pres salary by $100k and giving it to his wife. But, then again, maybe the argument is that they represent the volunteer spirit of our nation, the idea of giving back, sort of socialist ideal where people sacrifice for the state.

I don't think it's much of an issue, by any standard, and I can understand if you want to try to get some mileage off it for political reasons, but more objectively I think a case can be made for a First Lady to get a salary. Her life is not her own. And I did not mean to imply that Laura or any other first lady sought a salary. My point about other first ladies was that Icy's link exposed as a lie that right-wing claim that Michelle had more staff than other first ladies.
