It's the owners right to fire whomever they want to, or deem it necessary to. I got no issues with that. Good for her though. Read the article and see where they called the department in charge of EBT, and they state that people can buy beer with their EBT cash cards. They just can't use them in liquor stores and what have you.

Firing squad ends clerk’s EBT stand

Jackie Whiton, age 65, had worked as a cashier at the Big Apple convenience store in Peterborough, N.H., for years. But then a couple of weeks ago she committed a firing offense.
She refused to allow a welfare recipient to use his EBT card to buy a pack of smokes.
-------------
So she was fired. That’ll teach her. The gimme guy was a young man, about 20, and when he asked for cigarettes, Jackie Whiton handed them to him but asked for his ID. He handed her his EBT card.
“I said to him, ‘Do you think that the man in line behind you and the lady behind him want to buy you your cigarettes?’ And he said ‘Yes.’ Then he said, ‘Give me back my card.’ And I said, ‘Give me back my cigarettes.’ ”
“He was very capable of working,” Jackie said, “so I told him to get a J-O-B.”
A few minutes later, she was fired.

Yes, it is, but ultimately the rules of the job supercede one's personal opinions.
People need to realize the dependent, welfare, handout, do less, subsidized generation we're creating. When a 20 year old walks into a store to buy smokes with a government provided, taxpayer funded EBT card, we have problems. This specific incident is exemplary of the mindset we're encouraging, and condoning, to large segment of our society. This is truly unacceptable imo.

If a person is on SSI disability, do they also get an EBT cash card?
I don't see how a disabled person should be prohibited from buying whatever they want with their monthly check. I mean, if any one of us suddenly became disabled would we want a store clerk, who didn't know us from Adam, telling us what she felt we should or should not be able to buy? Especially if the law says we can buy it.
There are all sorts of disablities which do not have physical aspects, you know.
The issue with EBT cards is that you do not know what they are for, probably in this case it is for unemployment. How do they know it is a welfare recipient???
If it is unemployment he can buy whatever he wants to buy with it..
If it were food stamps then he can only buy food.. no paper products, booze or cigarettes...
Not sure how you tell the difference though.

You're blaming the wrong party for the firing. The store owner SHOULD fire that lady - - it was none of her business and she doesn't get to decide who can buy what. She was WAY out of line as an employee. If she wants to make policy, she should run for office or support a referendum or candidate. What she did was clearly a federal/state offense. What does Howie Carr expect of the store chain? To willfully break the law???
Now, then:
I DO agree, however, on the overall subject. While it should not be the employee or the store owner's call, the Government should definitely make the rules on the EBT card to strictly limit what can be bought to food, non-alcoholic drink and necessities. No ciggies, no beer, no lotto tickets. It's 2012 - - the card could simply be blocked electronically from buying ciggies, beer, porn, lottos, etc. It would be easy to implement.
It's the Government who dropped the ball there, not the store owner. Howie Carr (as usual) is an imbecile who shoots first and asks questions later for blaming the store chain instead of the meathead government policymakers who aren't putting limits on the EBT card.

I guess your right on this one but the Left Wing Media and Liberals all across the country would go insane and anybody in Government who was behind making stricter rules could kiss their career goodbye.

I think that in general, any government type of personal subsidy, be it unemployment or anything, should be only for basic needs (food)
there are a couple of principles here that I think should be considered. first, this is what all of these programs are really for. second, governments have red ink all over them....I think enforcing a food only rule on these subsidies is a grea tplace to start saving money or having a set dollar amount helping more people.
