We Are Living in a ‘Modern Day Depression’:
Says noted economist, David Rosenberg
"This dramatic statement is based on several factors, including the record number of Americans living on Food Stamps — 46 million or 1-in-7 in 2011. Because these benefits are now given in the form of electronic debit cards, we don't have bread lines like in the 1930s, but they are there in virtual form. And that's just the most obvious form of government support for its struggling citizenry."
We Are Living in a
Pretty interesting article that cites many factors supporting his opinion.

If we could ever get any of the actual figures without the government sponsored manipulations I have no doubt what we are currently going through would be realized to be worse than the Great Depression, and it is only going to get worse.

Re: We Are Living in a ‘Modern Day Depression’:
Every day as I drive my grandson to work drive N on 95, and notice the amount of BMW's, Audi's, Mercedes and other very high end cars on the highway never mind all the new cars being driven. That is an "eyeball test".
What is going on economically is basically effecting the lower and middle class, there is still plenty of growth for a select group.. but overall many are doing quite well.
Take a ride by any seaside community and notice the amount of huge homes being built, take a ride to Newport and observe the fleet for the "America's Cup" and the stands for corporate America...
People are flying, people are vacationing and people are spending a lot of money..
Things look bad, but look at it through the eyes of those who are still doing quite well..
Still believe that there is a shadow economy emerging, where more and more folks are working under the table and not claimiing their work..

And I think we'll continue to struggle for years to come.
Having said that, I actually agree with most of your comments above. Of course people are doing whatever they have to do to survive and provide for their families. Can't blame them either.
Hey, if you have the $$, now is a good time to get work done on your home for an honest price.
Haven't looked at the data, so I don't know the facts about how our wealthies did in the Great Depression. But my guess would be that it didn't hurt them as much as the average American. When you have millions/billions, it tends to make surviving a non-issue.
Also, Baby-Boomers have been much less affected by our economic struggles than those under 45 have been. Especially in the professional (white-collar) segments.

Re: We Are Living in a ‘Modern Day Depression’:
It the BLS weren't tweaking the numbers by removing people from the Workforce the unemployment rate would be over 11%.

Re: We Are Living in a ‘Modern Day Depression’:
Actually the premise of the thread could be correct. In the last depression Americans had nothing to fall back on and the government security net was not yet in place. Americans have lost something like 30% - 40% of their assets/equity.
Billions on billions have evaporated and the government has kept the economy afloat. Some of the very things we complain about all the time has kept us more stable than other areas of the world. Foreign governments are buying record treasuries again ... we appear to be the safest bet amongst bad bets in the world.
