Obviously it's a tragic loss. I read though that there are thousands of cops going to the funeral service. What's that cost? Maybe if it wasn't so expensive to pay for, and maintain a police force, we could have more of them.

I'm thinking funerals for people who died to protect us are a bill we can foot... soldiers, police, fire, all of them. I'm assuming (RW) that was tongue-in-cheek and that's just the point you were making.

Cost to who?

I can't swear as to how it works for police officers but I presume it works the same as it does for firefighters.

Those who attend from other departments pay their own way. If there's a spare engine, ambulance, car that can be taken out of service for the length of the funeral (trip) the members of the department attending are allowed to take it.

No one gets paid. In fact, some people give up a day's pay to attend.

It's called "Brotherhood."

At least that's how it worked in the Midwest.

I hope your not serious. A cop dies in the line of duty and all you can think of is how much is his funeral. They go at their own expense, and are off duty.

Willard thinks we already have enough.. no more needed.

There's nothing wrong with funerals. I'm merely questioning what the costs are, and how far they should go.

The cost to taxpayers. When I see stuff like this:

I can't help but wonder how much a funeral costs. I don't mean to sound insensitive, or disrespectful in any way, but "if" (stress here) all those people are on the clock, then I do have an issue with it. I want respects paid, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be limits involved. NOW, (stressed again) "if" it's as you say, that the fellow cops and firemen that show up, do so unpaid, then kudos to them. I think that shows the depth of the "brotherhood" you speak of. I've always assumed that their was compensation involved, and I do plead ignorance with respect to my assumption.

I am serious. When I see a couple thousand cops or fireman like that, I do wonder who foots the bill. That is if there is one. I think one can respectfully inquire about such things. As such, you all have informed me that these servicemen show up on their own time.

Strangely, there isn't much info available via Google on who pays for officers to travel to police funerals.

But I agree with you that that taxpayers shouldn't be paying for any of the travel or expenses incurred. They should either pay for everything out of their own pockets or the police union should be footing the entire bill.
