Massive respect for the dude for serving his country but I don't get why he's suing. It's a sad sue culture here int he UK but from stories I hear it's ten times worse in the U.S.

She has an opinion...one which isn't a very wide spread one...but a legit and understandable opinion on war and the armed forces and what America is doing. She has every right to say 'we may ahve a conflict of interests, maybe you should consider elsewhere'. She sent him the application form, so by not even applying and not testing her resolve on the matter, he's got no leg to stand on.

This wasn't discrimination at all...and those who would use bigot, I'd look at the way you post on here with YOUR own dogmatic nature and beliefs, then look at yourselves in the mirror Some of you are bigots in your very own sense.
I disagree. It's clear she didn't want the guy there and it's clear why she didn't want the guy there. An employer who tells an a gay person inquiring about job that he wouldn't be happy there because he was anti-gay has sent the message you need not apply. An employer who tells a black kid inquiring about a job that he wouldn't be happy working there because he's a racist has sent the message. I don't see much wiggle room and I think all would have a case of discrimination especially if the sentiments were recorded on tape. If I got a VM telling me that I'd feel the same way. Based on the info in the article he has a good case. If there's stuff out of context or missing then i might change my mind

Well she was certainly within her rights since she is a owner occupier. She did the guy a favor what if he signed the lease and found out what a jerk she was afterwards?

Win win situation, she gets her property rights, he doesn't have a jerk for a landlord.

Did it turn out that she is in fact an owner/occupier (in a small enough bulding)?

I said that on the basis of someone mentioning it on this thread. Even if she isn't an owner occupier I think people should rent to whom they want to rent. And either way it is better for the soldier to avoid this a hole.

Not for nothing, but this dude needs to get over it and find someplace else to live. To sue, imo, is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate all that soldiers do, and while I may disagree with the landlords personal views, it is her property. She should be able to rent to whomever she wants to, or doesn't want to.

“For her to do that to me, it was like a spit in the face,” Morgan said. “For what we have gone through overseas, to come home to our country and have people ... discriminate against us. ... It made me extremely insecure about being a soldier.”
I feel for this guy, but seriously, that's life pal. There are always going to be people who either don't like you, disagree with you, or feel something that most personally don't comprehend. That's life. Heck, some people in here even hate Santa Claus.

Morgan filed suit last week in Suffolk Superior Court, accusing Roberts of violating a state law that prohibits landlords from refusing to rent to veterans.
Really? There's a law that says that? Why? So if I show up I can be turned down, but if my brother shows up the landlord has to rent to him? I don't think we need more laws like this. I'll support vets until I die, but I don't need laws that force me to.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I don't think the law means a landlord must rent to veterans does it? If the veteran has bad references, bad credit etc. I think they can turn them down like anyone else. The discrimination is when being a veteran is the reason. No different than being a Jew, a minority, etc. and being refused on those bases alone.

So that means a veteran has more rights than I do? Why all the special rules and privledges for people who live and breathe just like you and me? I get it, I do. I just think we've reached the point where it's unnecessary is all. People who own property should be able to rent to whomever they choose. I understand that opens it up to people being discriminated against for reasons x, y, and z. IMO, so be it.

One would have to be out of their minds not to love and support our veterans.

No, one would have to have a different opinion from yours (and mine, for that matter.) You don't get extra brownie points for finding the highest rooftop to shout "YAY FOR VETERANS."

That said, yay for veterans.

I believe we owe our veterans for their service, and we owe them our respect. I just don't believe that anyone who disagrees is out of his or her mind. We kill an awful lot of people for every soldier/marine/airman we lose. We are fighting wars on their home turf. I can completely understand people who hold a different opinion from mine.

But once you're back home, your service was on behalf of me, and all the other Americans, whether or not we personally agree with war or a given war.

In reference to this story, I think her idea of being pro-peace seems to extend to being anti-veteran -- or at least to making assumptions of what he believes about our wars.

He claims her voice-mail says she doesn't know why he'd want to rent there, it would be a "conflict of interest," blah blah blah. The appropriate way to broach that is to say "look we're far left hippies who really hate war, and we don't pull punches when we criticize the armed services. If soldiers kill innocents, we think it's murder, and we'll say so... you cool with that?"

She did stipulate that his service “would not impede his chances to rent from us." The law is against refusing to rent to veterans. She did not do so, but it's pretty thin gruel, legally speaking. State law says veteran status is a protected class. So, shoe on the other foot:

What if someone left a voice-mail and said "Look, you're Black, and you can fill out the application and it won't impede your chance of renting, but I gotta tell you, I don't like your people, and nobody in this neighborhood does. I don't know why you'd even want to rent here, really. It would probably be uncomfortable for both of us. But it's cool, fill out the application, I'll look it over."

The right thing to do (I think) is to say "please fill out the application... I'm with you, but you have to understand what you're getting into. This neighborhood is really racist."

All this is assuming the equivalency assumed in the state law, which bans discrimination against vets. I think I agree with the state law. I think she should have said, if she said anything, "our ideas/beliefs/etc. might bother you, please be ready for that if you get the apartment."

There's a difference between being against wars and being against the people we all pay to fight them. If you really care about the people, after what they've been through on your behalf, you'll approach it differently than she did.

The law says you can't discriminate against vets in renting, not that you can't be anti-war, or for that matter, get together with your hippie friends and talk about how any vet is a baby-burner (if in fact her distaste for veterans extends that far.)

Based on the law, I see no distinction between that and racism. Signing up to serve your country means signing up for whatever war and whatever kind of war our leadership says to fight. It certainly means signing up for war in general. In practical terms, we -- American society -- pay a lot of money to create enough demand that some people will sign up for whatever reason.

Blaming them for the general evil of war or the particular evil of a particular war is bullsh1t, in my opinion. From the looks of things, this woman (and her friends) are well over that line, letting his veteran status override his human rights.
