Default Musings on Economic Common Sense

Was reading an article in the Globe this morning that basically stated the fact that people are holding onto their cars longer is a bad thing.

I've read many articles that look at dropping home values as a bad thing...

I read business and economic publications that try to tell us that the fact Americans are spending less and saving more is a bad thing...

Why are these people so ignorant that they can not understand

-People holding onto their cars longer is a great thing
-Making homes more affordable is a very good thing
-Not spending more than we make is a GOOD thing

All the stuff we SHOULD have been doing all along are happening and it's all good. But of course we all know most of the people who write these articles want Amerians to SPEND, SPEND, SPEND....

Good for us that we're not!

Tax-Men in Black: Higher Taxes are Bad For Will Smith and the Poor - YouTube

This guy has common sense. Watch Will Smith's reaction when he finds out how much France takes out of their citizens paychecks!

My wife (who is a bit more liberal than I am) had a pretty similar reaction when we were watching NBC Nightly News and they mentioned the new French President campaigned on raising French taxes on a million Euros or more to 90%.

She said something to the effect of why would anyone work hard enough to make that much, to just have to government take 90 cents for every dollar.

For whatever reason, it seemed like she hadn't thought of it in that regard before

Is that what the article REALLY said, or is that your interpretation of it?

Perhaps it said it was a bad thing for car manufacturuers.

Do you have a link?

It's in today's Boston Globe business section.

But my point stands regardless...ask any "so-called" expert and they'll try to tell you it's bad for the economy. My point is that reduced spending by American households is a good thing for the average American regardless of short-term affects upon the economy.

If Americans need to over-spend in order for our economy to prosper, that's REALLY bad shmessy. My hope is that we never again repeat our spending mistakes of the past. We should all hope for that.
