The money quote from your link:

Quote:
The feds were tipped off about the motel by a Drug Enforcement Administration agent whose primary job was to identify properties for forfeiture. In this case, the agent believes he learned about the property in 2008 by reading news accounts. He then contacted the Tewksbury Police Department, and eventually received detailed stories of drug deals at the motel.

They have a guy(s) whose jobs is catching drug importers but scouting for private property to seize.....WOW.

I see nothing to indicate that the cops asked the owner to work with them to stop any drug dealing perhaps he should sue to cops for allowing the area to deteriorate and hurt his property value....

As recently as May 20th, there was an incident that necessitated police involvement...

How is it that some establishments become a crime magnet, while others seem less so????

Is the message conveyed one of a law abiding citizen, or anarchy as long as you pay???

Perhaps it is related to the location of the establishment. I don't know anything about Tweksbury, is the area different now than when the hotel was built 50+ years ago?

Wouldn't some get upset if he started profiling customers?

If he committed a crime that would be one thing, in this case he is having to prove his innocence of others committing crimes, unamerican IMO.

That is my point ... because i have seen it through the years. There are business owners more than willing to look the other way because they care more about making money than they do the community.

It eats up police resources, brings down property values, people don't want to own or rent near there and discourages investment in the area.

When places like this are torn down entire areas suddenly come to life.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see cars pulling in and out all night and know what is going on.

Is there any evidence that government-sponsored urban renewal actually works? Anecdotally it seems to me that it fails much more often than it succeeds.

But even if they are aware, it still doesn't justify our gov't taking the owners assets. The gov't should at least have to prove "Beyond a reasonable doubt" that the owner was complicit in a crime.

This isn't comparable to siezing the assets of a large-scale drug dealer/member of a cartel...which is supposed to be the purpose of the law.

If I look out my windown and see my neighbor dealing drugs, it's not a crime for me NOT to report it.

The last thing we need is for this loop-hole to be used to create gov't revenue...sorta like police being sent out with speeding ticket quota's...both are as immoral as the crime committed.

It may not be a crime, but it is your civic duty to report a crime...

This has been going on since 1984, when congress passed and Reagan signed an act allowing it..

How do some places become crime magnets, while others do not???
