None of those things are current base standards of the Republican party. Not even close.
for a group of people who don't believe in evolution, the GOP has sure evolved over the years.
Gee, been in here 5 minutes and I get to call "horse*****" on another libby "projecting" his view on the other side.
Again......... 100% conservative Republican and I totally believe in evolution. Perhaps you are lumping in the evangelicals with every other republican, but our "group of people" as you put it are made up of many different people. Some, like myself, aren't even religious at all.
No sweat though.... I get it..... We all look the same to you narrow minded fellas. Hmmmmm, now where have I see that before

I have to agree with you on this one Patriot_in_NY; at least with your "there are Rs who believe in evolution" point you were making.
The Rs who I know (both my rents as a couple of quick examples), both routinely vote a straight R ticket, and both believe in evolution, at least given the current state of scientific understanding.
Now, I don't know any Bible thumpers from down south, so I can't speak to their "brand".
Further, there is nothing RINO about my mom at least...she wont even vote for a D who is running unopposed.
Now, I admit HD could have been going with satire in his post, I just couldn't tell for certain.
claiming the GOP was behind civil rights is on par with me saying every GOP right winger is a creationalist.
Excellent...thought I was going to have to re-calibrate my meter
As to your later point, there is so much dynamic movement to our politics and the sides which champion a given issue....it can be folly to state with any certainty items like the above because the needle is always moving.
What constitutes an R now didnt 50 years ago. And what an R 175 years ago isn't one now....but you knew that anyway.
I'm about as conservative as we have on this board, yet I am okay with gay marriage... partly because I don't view it as a religious issue and partly because I have a niece that is "married" to a beautiful young lady here in NY state. When it came to us for a vote, we (as a state) did what was right for us. I don't begrudge any other state where the people decide otherwise for themselves. They (a state) are not stupid, they just don't think like we (you and I do). In fact, I invite all the gay folks from NC up a here to NY..... we're cool with it.
So on this issue, I agree with Obama more then Romney. Doesn't make me any less inclined to vote for Romney, I just think he's wrong on this one particularly issue. In fact, I think he's wrong on quite a few others too. Not nearly as many as Obama though, which is why I will vote for him. The "R" behind his name doesn't mean d!ck to me.
Bottom line......... I'm calling horse***** on your "lockstep" comment. Perhaps it's projection on your part, but it's not NEARLY accurate, at least amongst all my conservative friends (and I guarantee I know more then you do).
"pubbies who fall in lockstep..." = a subset of republicans fall in lockstep
"pubbies, who fall in lockstep, ..." = all republicans fall in lockstep
Now, I do happen to think Republicans tend to think / act in one direction more than Dems -- but that is simply an opinion, and it doesn't apply to all republicans (or all dems), obviously.
I completely disagree with you about it being a state's rights issue. I don't think it's fine for a state to just decide to deny people equal rights -- particularly when the populace is far from agreement. 60% of the people shouldn't be deciding that some subset of the state's citizens should have diminshed rights -- particularly when 40% of the people disagree with them (rough numbers, obviously).
OT: Many of my friends are republicans, actually, but frankly, they are a bit lost politically, because they aren't social conservatives. When we have longer conversations, we realize that we're fairly similar in what we really want, because we all tend toward libertarianism first (note: none us are actual libertarians). What a lot of it comes down to for these guys is simply taxes.
