Default Richard Grenell, Controversial Mitt Romney Spokesman, Resigns

Richard Grenell, a former George W. Bush administration official and presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's controversial choice for national security spokesman, is leaving the campaign less than two weeks after his appointment.

The Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin, who broke the news Tuesday, suggested that the openly gay Grenell likely resigned because of a "full-court press by anti-gay conservatives." Grenell confirmed his resignation in a statement to Rubin:

His statement:

I have decided to resign from the Romney campaign as the Foreign Policy and National Security Spokesman. While I welcomed the challenge to confront President Obama’s foreign policy failures and weak leadership on the world stage, my ability to speak clearly and forcefully on the issues has been greatly diminished by the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues that sometimes comes from a presidential campaign. I want to thank Governor Romney for his belief in me and my abilities and his clear message to me that being openly gay was a non-issue for him and his team.

If he was pressured out because he was gay then shame on them. That could be a death blow in the general election.

He is controversial for other reasons though:

"He's unbearable," says one journalist. "Very pushy and very demanding," says another. Grenell is said to complain incessantly, hectoring correspondents and their bosses and trying to "mold" wire stories to fit his message. He yells at anyone whose slant doesn't follow his, says one source. "He yells at people whenever he is uncomfortable, particularly foreigners," says another.

Well if they did it because of his sexual orientation that is gutless and speaks badly of him.(Romney).

Ha...they said the same crap about Rahm Emanuel, didn't seem to stop Obama from being elected.

Today's GOP is becoming so exclusive, I'm surprised they actually have a base population that could control any substantial percentage of voting at all.

Its also funny that "etch-asketch" dude is still around, but not this Gay spokesman...

keep it up GOP!

sounds like 'I'm Gay and certain people didn't like it' to me.

I'm highly skeptical that Romney booted him for being gay.

Could Romney have folded to homophobic interests in the party? Perhaps, but I'm skeptical of that as well. Maybe if it were a few months down the road, the campaign was stagnating and he was desperate for their support, but I doubt he would have done so at this point.

From the updates on the article it sounds like Romney tried to get him to stay. I can't quite make heads or tails out of it right now.

On one hand, it sounds like he, Grenell, quit because outside Republicans were harassing him and calling attention to his sexuality to the point where it was interfering with his ability to get anything accomplished.

On the other hand, it sounds like he might not have been all that nice of a person to begin with - apparently he removed something like 800 tweets from his account, scrubbed his personal website and was taking alot of heat forunder fire for numerous sexist and impolitic statements he had made about prominent women and members of the media....although I am not sure who, if anyone, was complaining.

He also seems to have a rather bad reputation with the media - being called deceptive, dishonest and a liar by several media people.

If that's the case I've got to wonder why Romney would have wanted him in the first place much less supposedly begged him to stay.

That sounds like a resume for Fox News...

The problem with something like this is that for this Grenell guy to be an aggrieved party he has to come out of this somehow hurt. However he's a talking head who's now known by like 50 million more people. Even if it turns out Romney fired him for being gay, Romney still did him a favor.
