JackBauer, Kerry was a good candidate, but an awful politician. He should have found a way to crush the attacks against him. I believe, for instance, he could have turned those attacks into a war on Vietnam vets, who got the shaft anyways. Romney has made a lot of gaffes, but his campaign hasn't done anything that compares with Kerry's failure to effectively answer the critics of his military service.

Would have been quite a trick since most Viet Nam era vets remember all the lies and how he slandered US vets

The attack on liberal Vietnam vets was despicable in my opinion. After the abuse all the vets took when they came home from both the left and the right (who ignored them, even though it was during Nixon's presidency), the idea of exploiting Vietnam vets to make political hay was despicable. Besides, at the very least, the anti-war movement saved the lives of thousands of soldiers who would have died if the war had continued.

Couldn't I make the argument that Kerry brought the vets prominently into his campaign "to make political hay"? I mean this is the same Kerry that went to Congress, with his fake "accent" and his Medals and fired them over the wall right? Seems he was playing the "Im a vet" aspect of his past against a war time president (similar to what McCain did when he brought Palin in to combat his running against a Minority)

I think this situation is similar to when a pols kids/wife getting involved in their camps. If they stand on the sidelines then they should be left alone.

If you jump into the campaign and are actively involved with it, then are you not fair game?

I fully recognize politics in this country is far too "nasty".

Also please note I do not agree with Nam or how the the general population treated the vets when they returned.

Yeah I thoiught that Keyy's phoney reporting for duty act was despicable after his lies during the Winter Soldier 'hearing' (where no one testifying was under oath), That he used it to launch his political career spitting on the graves of dead vets and smearing the live ones will never be forgotten by those of us who were in the military when he lied about us.

Kerry was certainly playing up his veteran status, but I think the nature of the attacks crossed the line. To question his intent and his medals when he clearly his life on the line was pretty outrageous. They would never ever ever do that to a Republican. Look at deferment Cheney, Bush copping out of Vietnam, and Reagan's cowardly military career. The Republicans kept quiet. They are sleazy.
