NEA Teachers Have Become Re-Educators
By PHYLLIS SCHLAFLY | Posted Friday, July 25, 2008 4:30 PM PT
The nation's largest teachers union, the National Education Association, attracted 9,000 delegates to its annual convention in Washington, D.C., over the July Fourth weekend. Delegates sported buttons with provocative slogans such as "Gay marriage causes global warming only because we are so hot," "Hate is not a family value," "The Christian right is neither" and "Gay rights are civil rights."
The delegates passed dozens of hard-hitting resolutions that now become the NEA's official policy. The resolutions authorize NEA members and employees to lobby for those goals in the halls of Congress and state capitols.
NEA resolutions cover the waterfront of all sorts of political issues that have nothing to do with improving education for schoolchildren, such as supporting statehood for the District of Columbia, a "single-payer health care plan" (i.e., government run), gun control, ratification of the International Criminal Court Treaty and taking steps "to change activities that contribute to global climate change."
..............
The NEA wants every child, regardless of age, to have "direct and confidential access, without notification to parents, to comprehensive health education. That would include things such as learning how to use condoms for premarital sex, as well as social, and psychological programs and services."

Phyllis Shafly is an objective writer who has not specific agenda, we should dwell upon every word as she spaketh the truth.. wonder the last time she knocked off a piece. guess at 84 years old she still has some good memories. OTOH an ass clown of the first degree, cannot believe anyone would post something she wrote and thinks it may be credible.

Quoting a nutjob like Phyllis Schlafly lends credence to nothing in the article. The woman is insane.
Do you have a link indicating these are not the positions espoused by the NEA?
We know they have a hard left agenda.

We just have to try to evaluate them the best we can."

It's the irrational fear of the NEA by an irrational, senile nut that I'm talking about. If I posted an essay by Al Sharpton about the NRA I doubt it would command much respect from you. That's how some of us feel about Schlafly.

IOW she is correct about the stated agenda, but you think this is OK.

Maybe you didn't read her whole column, but I found her presentation paranoid and one sided. Rather ridiculous in fact. The NEA wants to create a climate in schools that's safe for children, including gay kids and other minorities. The NEA wants to teach tolerance and respect. The NEA wants kids to be prepared for the real world, not create some sort of fascistic Disneyland where we pretend various groups don't really exist or matter. Her point of view is not merely conservative, it's paranoid. A legitimate discussion on the issues can be had, but first you have to talk about the problems that the NEA is trying to address. She avoided that, and simply used scare tactics. She's a right wing nut.
So you don't dispute the content merely the 'presentation', well many of the issues the NEA addresses are ones I asa parent don't want addressed in elementary and HS.
It is not the business of the Public school system to push a hard left political agenda anymore than it is the agenda of the schools to advocate a conservative agenda. Imagine if the NEA were pushing Christianity rather than promoting gay rights?
I especially object to the NEA trying to turn Home Schooling into a crimianl activity, especially given the terrible (criminal?) performance of public education.
Her points are well taken

More like they want to use the education system to indoctrinate kids into following their world view. Sadly, so few parents know what's going on here. Parents send their kids to school thinking they're being educated, and instead, they're being indoctrinated and brainwashed. The fact that these unions are so involved in advertising politically should raise red flags about their objectivity.
