Default 8th Grade Level (what does it mean)

When Obama governs by Executive Order instead of by Legislative Fiat, as he has done all along and as he has pledged to continue doing, he effectively turns the United States into a dictatorship with him as the dictator.

Obama has bypassed Congress and issued 95 Executive Orders so far,
with many more to come as he has said so himself.

These are not the acts of an American President, they are the acts of an American Dictator and it is difficult to imagine a more serious threat to freedom and democracy in the United States than this.

As well it should have since the average adult in the USA reads betwen the 8th and 9th grade reading levels.

The following best selling writers write at the 7th grade level.

John Grisham
Tom Clancy
Michael Crichton
Stephen King
Clive Cussler
Mary Renault
Frank McCourt
Arthur Golden

Romance novels are usually written at the 5th grade level.

Mark Twain wrote his novels at a 5th grade level and his essays at the 7th grade level.

knew there was no way you wrote that post -- while it ignored context and is full of hyperbole, it was at least coherent

I wonder what the difference is between 7th grade and 12th grade level reading. Since everyone is supposed to be able to read by 2nd grade...

I know 12th grade level reading isn't exactly "advanced" reading level.

NOW....

Reading isn't the same as communicating to a group of people, is it? When someone speaks to the American people, it is not necessary to speak/communication at 8th grade level

We are not children.

There's a website which, if you register, will analyze your writing sample and score it for you. A lot of freelance writers use it because frequently writing assignments specify a grade level for the type of writing expected.

I took the liberty of converting your post to a txt.file and analyzing it for you.

You measured 910.L which translates to a 6th grade level.

Lexile-to-Grade Correspondence

There is not much difference between the spoken and written when it comes to holding an audience. If you talk above their heads, if you use long sentences, multi-syllabic words and excessive adjectives, you lose a larg percentage of people along the way.

Much like you complain about MrP's posts, as a matter of fact.

If you give a speech at the 8th grade level more people can understand what he is saying.. that is a populist method to insure everyone understands, not just the educated folks.

OTOH someone from Politico has too much time on their hands, did they count the pauses... or how many times he said I, much ado about nothing.

I know I write/read/communicate at a level far above 6th grade. That being said, the things we post here should register low.

If you want to know what level we register at, you have to write with that in mind. I have no doubt my reading and writing would post at a high level, but then again, we don't know what metrics they're using.

Again, what is reading & writing at a 12th grade level?

Honestly?

Scientific journal articles and credit card agreements.

I encourage you to take the time to register at the site I linked to (it only sakes about 45 seconds) and run through something you think is written at a high level.

Really.

Try it.

I'd even be willing to do it for you just to prove a point. PM me something you've written and I'll be glad to change it to a plain.txt file and run it through for you.

It doesn't mean you're dumb to write at a 6 - 8th grade level. In fact, it's encouraged. Stephen King is not dumb...Mark Twain was not dumb. Tom Clancy and John Grisham are certainly not dumb - nor are their books "dumb." They are interesting and accessible. The pace is rapid, the language is entertaining and the plots are involved and well thought out.

Could they have written their best sellers at a 12th grade level? Probably - but why would they? Unless they wanted to fail, of course. Not too many people want to read scientific journals or credit card agreements. Nor are they capable of it, for that matter.

Yet millions have passed 12th grade reading/writing...so that doesn't make sense.

Thank you for the offer...and I know your post is sincere, but I don't have anything written on a computer to send. But let's use a fictional person who got a 700 on the English portion of their SAT's, then went on to college and aced several english/writing courses...and they wrote something and registered at 8th or 9th grade.

Then we'd know that grading website was wrong, wouldn't we? (a question, not a statement).

Also, you & both know that no one (even you & I) could not possibly write legal jargon or scientific journals as you described above. But if we got trained on it, we'd do fine.

My pride isn't that big that I need confirmation of my reading/writing skills.
