Former RNC Chair, Haley Barbour, Pardons over 200 including Rapists and murderers
This is strange, Haley Barbour is leaving the Governorship... and on the way out has pardoned over 200 criminals, these ain't the scofflaws, these are some bad dudes...
Geez the NY Daily News should use spellcheck, it is trustee not trustie.
So he had 200 Trustees working at the Governor's mansion??? That sounds like a lot..
Bitter family members angrily blasted Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour after his 11th-hour pardons freed four murderers who savagely killed their loved ones.
“I’m totally disgusted,” said Glenda Walker, whose son was shot to death in 1993 by ex-inmate David Gatlin. “... One man can’t put you in jail. I don’t think it’s right for one man to remove you from jail.”
The governor, who leaves office Tuesday, did not respond to calls for comment on the bitter response to his decision. All the pardoned men worked at trusties in the governor’s mansion, and granting trusties their freedom is a decades-old tradition in the state.

On the surface I despise this practice too. I think governors and presidents should have the authority to pardon people, but that it should only be used in the most exceptional of circumstances. I do think there are cases where a pardon is appropriate, but without knowing all 200 here, I'd guess there are a lot of questionable uses of his governors authority.

The really sad thing about this story is that it will be news for a day or two and then it will just go away. People are too used to hear about abuses of power.

A Mississippi judge issued a temporary injunction forbidding the release of any more prisoners pardoned by outgoing Gov. Haley Barbour.
Five convicted murderers were released Sunday, officials said.
"We have ordered that they report to the Department of Corrections," said Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood.
A court hearing on the matter will be held Monday.

Was he pissed because his political career was over? The article mentions that three of the murders were "grisly". One murder happened in 2001......Is this some type of reverse psychology for capital punishment?

We'll see what he has to say .... 189 of the 215 were already out of prison before today ... so we're talking about 26 people. Very strange this custom they have of granting clemency for people who worked at the mansion ... that is messed up.
So tomorrow's Clarion-Ledger is supposed to have his statemen
Among the pardoned was the brother of retired National Football League star quarterback Brett Favre. Earnest Scott Favre was convicted in 1996 of driving while intoxicated resulting in the death of his best friend. He was sentenced to a year of house arrest and two years probation.
