Americans are the world's top consumers of cannabis and cocaine despite punitive US drug laws, according to an international study published in the online scientific magazine PLoS Medicine.

The study, released Monday, revealed that 16.2 percent of Americans had tried cocaine at least once, and 42.4 percent had used marijuana.

In second-place New Zealand, just 4.3 percent of study participants had used cocaine, and 41.9 percent marijuana.

The research was conducted at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, based on World Health Organization data from 54,068 people in 17 countries.

Rates of participation differed from country to country, and researchers noted uncertainty over how honestly people report their own drug use.

"Nevertheless, the findings present comprehensive data on the patterns of drug use from national samples representing all regions of the world," a PLoS statement said.

Hard to tell from the article, but do you know if the numbers were weighted? America has a larger population than New Zealand, for instance, so it would make sense that more people had used.

I do have a slight issue with it though. I find it hard to believe that in countries where it's legal (or damn near legal) there aren't more users.

Typically studies like this originating from WHO are stacked to make America look bad. I'm just sayin'...

Imagine the money this country could make by legalizing all these drugs, then regulating them and taxing them (they could issue Free Gas)

The only people that would be using them are the same people that are using them now.

The creepy looking drug dealers with $500 sneakers on that stand on the corner giving hand signals to each other, killing each other and babbling their stupid f-cking gibberish would have to go to work cleaning toilets.

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, all this war on something crap... all they are is feel good programs that perpetuate themselves with insufficient information, poor performance appraisal and lots of politicians who really like to wash balls.. attaboy there is the chief handing out an award for the DARE program..
