BERLIN – The United States government denied political asylum to Ali Ahmad Asseri, the former first secretary of the Saudi consulate in Los Angeles, last week to avoid disrupting US-Saudi relations, according to a Saudi-American blogger and journalist based in Brazil.
Asseri argued that if he returned to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia he would face execution because the country’s radically fundamental form of Islam mandates the death penalty for same-sex relations.
The Saudi-American journalist and blogger, Rasheed Abou-Alsamh, appears to have been the first writer to report on the asylum rejection. The possible deportation of Asseri to Saudi Arabia has electrified blog observers of the case over the last few days.
The Jerusalem Post’s e-mail and telephone attempts to secure on Saturday a confirmation and comment from the US State Department’s Middle East press section were not immediately returned.
I think that's pretty close to the headline that would have appeared in the NY Times if this happened under Bush.
I don't know about anyone else, but I don't give a sod about U.S.-Saudi relations. We should have invaded that hellhole instead of Iraq.

If he really faces death I'd support him being granted asylum. Lets see what happens, I'm not against the administration letting the court system take the blame for any issues with the Saudis. Why not try and avoid a fight over it if possible?
Ideally someone would invent a way to turn sea water into gasoline for $0.50/gal. Then we could tell the Saudis to stick their backwards-thinking heads up their behinds; but until then some tact is prolly for the best, as long as at the end of the day this guy doesn't face death just for being gay.
Too bad he isn't Obama's uncle or aunt or something. Then asylum would have been a certified guarantee. Someone give this guy that lawyer in Clevelands number.

"The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him." Muslims don't like homosexuals, liberals like homosexuals and liberals love Muslims, but liberals like homosexuals also, muslims hate homosexuals but their lovers the liberals like homosexual, the hell with it..........

The article alluded to the idea that Obama may have decided to let the court system order a change in his status. Sure, that may not happen, but the admin's current decision not to grant asylum can be undone with nothing much more than a signed piece of paper and a phone call I'd expect. My comment to wait and see what happens was with respect to how the courts act and what the admin does if they don't act.

Are you freaking serious?
We need Saudi oil so this guy must be executed because he's GAY!? REALLY?
So which is it? You can't bring yourself to criticize Obama or you don't give a ***** about basic human rights. Which one?

Oh...
But why screw with this? The Saudis aren't aware that we consider their medieval system abhorrent? Maybe this would be a good mechanism for the Obamites in the WH to "give a hint" to the Saudis that they are aniumals who need to reform their stupid-ass culture and join the 20th century. We can work on the 21st century later.
