BTW--also from my original article:
Quote:
At a public hearing in Golden, Colo., on Monday, one of a series by the Bureau of Land Management across the West, reaction to the moratorium was mixed.

Alex Daue, an outreach coordinator for the Wilderness Society, an environmental conservation group, praised the government for assessing the implications of large-scale solar development.

Others warned the bureau against becoming mired in its own bureaucratic processes on solar energy, while parts of the West are already humming with new oil and gas development.

Craig Cox, the executive director of the Interwest Energy Alliance, a renewable energy trade group, said he worried that the freeze would “throw a monkey wrench” into the solar energy industry at precisely the wrong time.

“I think it’s good to have a plan,” Mr. Cox said, “but I don’t think we need to stop development in its tracks.”
It's a tough thing, you know?

How much is too much? If there's some kind of environmental damage from unproven technology, they'll drag Bush from retirement and kill him. But no one pays any attention to the damage from nat gas/oil/coal anymore.

Again--I'm not defending the freeze...just trying to figure it out.

And yes, I'm aware of the petro-related use of Fed land. As I said, it's a headshaker.

That's fine. Take time to research this. Evidently this was effected 6 weeks ago by BLM very quietly and is only now being found out.

I've been googling this all morning.

After all that, "Headshaker" is not exactly the term I would use.

Let's step back and try looking at this from a non partisan view. You have to do the studies because at some point in time projects like these are going to be brought to courts by environmental groups. The courts in this section of the country are very environmental leaning so you had better have some studies done to combat any law suites that arise. If we want real energy reform, maybe we should look at reducing some of the environmental hurdles that can get in the way of projects like these.

Just for laughs, compare this from 2004...

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO, California (ENS) — A new federal policy to encourage the development of solar energy resources on America’s public lands was announced during the Solar Power 2004 conference on Thursday in San Francisco.

“Our quality of life and economic security are dependent on a stable and abundant supply of affordable energy,” said Rebecca Watson, assistant secretary of the Interior for Land and Minerals Management, as she announced the new policy. “Encouraging the production and development of renewable energy on our public lands, including solar energy, is part of the president’s National Energy Policy.”

Where did I say "studies" are wrong?

A TWO YEAR MORATORIUM is a different thing altogether.

Just for fun...and because I want to make you start drinking by noon...read what I just posted from 2004, and think about how the studies could've been done THEN and then we could've been building the damn solar plants by 06...and now in 08 we'd have actual solar generated power flowing to Pheonix and Denver and wherever...

Just for fun.

I know. I know.

Still, warrants more than a "headshake", no?

P.S. taking 3 kids to the community pool today - - reason enough to start drinking by noon!

The best thing we can do right now is start drilling our own natural resources while working on alternatives. But Granny Pelosi won't allow that. Anyone who thinks this is just the Republicans has been to the Patters School of Partisanship too long. With expedited paperwork and approvals, drilling for our own oil would have a serious (positive) impact on gas prices quickly while we work on alternatives. The alternatives are interesting but none have been proven to be able to work on the large scale we'll need.

Once again, the subject of this thread is a TWO YEAR MORATORIUM on even considering new solar projects on Federally owned land.

I am fully in favor of drilling on the 77% of the Federal land ALREADY being leased but laying dormant.

If you want to play a tit-for-tat game regarding this very serious subject (which, it is evident the Bush Administration is doing here) then I don't see how it helps our nation.

As I said to Scout (see, Scout? How your post can turn this thread into the partisan bickering?) this subject can very quickly turn into a sidebar political mudslinging contest which only defeats a true discussion.
