I heard happy hour comes early every day in Maine.
An acquaintance fron Brooklyn told me one time that the U.S. is run like the Mafia. This was almost twenty years ago. It sort of went like this:
The Don = President.
Councilary= the Pres's cheif council
Lieutenants= Presisents cabinet
Capos =Anyone who carries out the Presidents or cabinets orders. Irs,FBI
We all pay tribute to the president/Don in the form of taxes for protection from the other families i.e. other countries,plus for goodies like roads,and schools to support the presidents agenda.

Maybe this is what they meant by "checks & balances"?
Conrad Says Countrywide Waived Point on His Mortgage (Update1)
By John Hughes and Nadine Elsibai
June 14 (Bloomberg) -- Senator Kent Conrad said he was given preferential treatment on a mortgage from Countrywide Financial Corp. and will write a $10,500 check to charity.
``It appears Countrywide waived one point on my mortgage,'' Conrad, a North Dakota Democrat, said in a statement today in Washington. ``Although I did not ask for or know that I was receiving a discount, and even though I was offered a competitive loan from another lender, I do not want to have received preferential treatment.'' Conrad said he also received a loan from Countrywide on an eight-unit apartment building in Bismarck, North Dakota, even though the lender typically serves properties that have four units or less. He said he had decided to refinance that loan with another institution.
Conrad and Senator Christopher Dodd, who oversees the U.S. mortgage industry as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, were among those who received loans through Countrywide's ``V.I.P.'' program, which waived points, fees and borrowing rules for prominent people, Portfolio magazine reported June 12. Dodd has denied receiving preferential treatment.
.....
Conrad received two loans from Countrywide, one for $1 million to refinance a vacation home and another for the eight- unit building in Bismarck, according to Portfolio.
Making an Exception
Countrywide Chairman Angelo Mozilo told an employee to ``take off one point'' from the vacation-home loan, which saved Conrad $10,700, the magazine said. The apartment loan violated Countrywide's policy of not loaning money for buildings with more than four units, Portfolio said. The story said Mozilo told an employee to make an exception for Conrad.
Sure pal, you had no idea you were getting any preferential treatment. That's why you went to a sub-prime lender for your mortgage, and also why you had them give you a loan for your 8 unit complex, when they don't do it for anything larger than 4. LOLOLOLOL!!!
BTW, $1 million dollar loan for a vacation home? A loan for an 8 unit building in Bismark? Where the %%^& do these people get all this money? We're electing more & more millionaires to office, and then we wonder why they're so out of touch.

"The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him." Leo Tolstoy, 1897
It's not necessarily being run by corporate america. It's being run by a bunch of crooked, silver spoon, millionaire politicians. The people vote in their representatives to both speak for, and protect them. The pols look to get elected for pub, power, and personal gain. A corp can only be as evil as the pols permit them to be. A lobbyist can only scheme as effectively as a politician allows them to. Ultimately it comes down to the people in charge. If the pols simply followed the Constitution, and ran government as was originally intended, we'd be fine right now. They don't, and unfortunately, the tax payer bears the burden.
I agree with you to a point. The problem is, all the world powers see corporations and business as the most important thing that exists. At some point, will it be more important than the rights of the individual (i.e. Bill of Rights)?
You may have seen my list of historical politicians who are/were member of the Council on Foreign Relations (thanks a. paul!) but did you notice the list of corporate members?
So if you don't believe business and government are becoming one, then take another look.

Why are they becoming one? Who lets into the party?
The politicians.

They get in because they have the power. You & I have no "power", so we're left out.
You can vote for who you want, you can work for who you want and failing that, you could run yourself.
How is that having no power?
Hell, you could form a PAC. Now, stay with me, I'm being serious--do you know how MoveOn.org started out? A couple of people, a few bucks and a fax machine.
(that's obviously the simplified version, lest anyone...ah, screw it, someone will anyway).

Sorry, but your wrong. They get in because weak, selfish, corrupt people let them in. If you were married & loved your wife, would you let Warren Buffett sleep with her if he wanted to? I'm going to go out on a limb and guess no. How about if he offered you $1 million? $100 million? Getting tempted yet? People of principle wouldn't do it for any price. Therefore, money, which equals power, isn't the determining factor. It's the person who ultimately decides. This country is where it is, because weak minded, corrupt, scumbag individuals, who were elected into office to protect the interests of the people, sold their principles for profit.

So, you're saying we're the greatest country in the world because weak minded, corrupt, scumbag individuals sold their principles for profit? Or do you just hate America?

When did being the greatest country in the world become part of the discussion that PR & I were having? Anyhow, I'll humor you and play along.
So by your logic, and I'll generously call it that, you love George Bush and will be supporting the continuation of his policies, since we're currently the greatest country in the world. Afterall, if you don't, then you must hate America.
