Default McCain..I disagree with what the majority of the American people want.

Interesting stuff we have all seen before, but with all the conjecture and hyperbole about Obama this provides some balance and reality.. the first is the 60 minutes report and the second is a very damning you tube compilation of the greatest gaff of McCain... this guy concerns me..

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/...81_page2.shtml

"I believe that we can succeed and I believe the consequences of failure are catastrophic. Those who say just withdraw, then you say, 'What next?'" McCain asked in the 2007 interview.

"I wonder at what point do you stop doing what you think is right and you start doing what the majority of the American people want?" Pelley asked.

"Well, again, I disagree with what the majority of the American people want. Failure will lead to chaos, withdrawal will lead to chaos," McCain said at the time.

"That was not what the American people wanted to hear at that time," Pelley pointed out.

"That's exactly right. It's not what they wanted to hear. I can read the polls very well," McCain said.

"But you said it anyway," Pelley said.

"Well, I said, at the time I'd much rather lose a campaign than lose a war. Now, more and more Americans are believing that the surge is succeeding. I'm very glad of that," McCain replied.

That is called leadership not just blindly following polls, BTW he was right about the surge and BO was wrong.

Leadership is not saying "I don't care what the American people want, I'm staying the course because I know better"

I believe another great leader named Richard Nixon had the same attitude about Vietnam. c'mon patsfan13, get a clue. If we, the people want out of Iraq, we'll be out of Iraq.

Why would any president ever believe he knows better than the people? Let us be reminded that the people are the power in this country, not the government. At least that's the vision our forefathers had for America.

another great leader FDR, broke rules and went against the will of the American people, by providing war ships escorts to Britian in the early days of WWII.

Great leaders don't pander to the popular whims, they do the right things and then bring the people along.

So you believe presidents somehow have the market cornered on what the right thing to do is? You've gotta be kidding!

You're "trying" to compare apples to oranges here PNM. In the early days of WWII, America was still reeling from the effects of WWI and had become isolationists. The American people and most of our politicians didn't want to risk engaging in another war and that desire was honored until the attack on Pearl Harbor.

In this case, the American people SUPPORTED sending our troops to Iraq. Now that we see that it was a mistake, Americans no longer want our sons & daughters in that country.

The only comparison here is Vietnam. Like Vietnam, we've had years to evaluate the monetary and human costs of our investment in Iraq and the people have overwhelmingly said "Get us the hell out of Iraq!"

You can try to compare it to a thousand presidential decisions that went against the will of the people, but they'd be irelevant comparisons.

I think you know that.

Reminds me of an old Pete Seeger song, "what did you learn in school today dear little boy of mine, I learned that presidents never tell a lie...."

If this is what he is saying prior to being elected he will deem himself as unelectable..

No Presidents frequently make mistakes. We have a representative form of government we elect leaders to make decisions not blindly follow polls. DOn't like the decisions.... elect the other guy..
