Default Sex Ed in NYC

Quote:
High-school students go to stores and jot down condom brands, prices and features such as lubrication.

Teens research a route from school to a clinic that provides birth control and STD tests, and write down its confidentiality policy.

Kids ages 11 and 12 sort “risk cards” to rate the safety of various activities, including “intercourse using a condom and an oil-based lubricant,’’ mutual masturbation, French kissing, oral sex and anal sex.

Teens are referred to resources such as Columbia University’s Web site Go Ask Alice, which explores topics like “doggie-style” and other positions, “sadomasochistic sex play,” phone sex, oral sex with braces, fetishes, porn stars, vibrators and bestiality.
I don't know where YOU guys went on field trips LOL...And there's a standardized test afterwards:

D.C. Public Schools announced last month, in a move that's the first of its kind in the country, that students in grades 5, 8 and 10 will be administered standardized tests on sexuality, contraception and drug use.

Good grief!! I worked in an emergency room and I don't even know all that much about some of those things.

Seems a bit much, doesn't it?

Seems like a good place for some of that "middle ground," doesn't it?

There's the extreme that says "Don't even mention sex." in schools to this......and neither of them is really right.

I believe there should be sex education in the schools. It would be nice if all parents had "the talk" with their kids, but they don't - and even those that do have it don't always do a good job of it. And sometimes kids won't ask their parents a question that they'd ask a teacher.

Kids should have good information about "how," and the "why." They should get educated about sexually transmitted diseases and how to prevent them - pregnancies and how to prevent them, too.

If there are extra questions, they can be handled, I'm sure. I just don't see that introducing detailed instructions on positioning, sadomasochistic practices or bestiality needs to be taking place.

The "oral sex with braces," however, brings an old ambulance call story back to mind.....only it didn't involve braces, it involved 2 teenages with "special" secret piercings that got tangled and parents who were due home any minute.

Sometimes I really miss that job.

Yet another empty curriculum from the Pied Pipers running sex ed.

Any mention of emotional or psychological risks on that scale? What's that? They treat sex as purely a biological/physical act? I am shocked.

Yeah, change for the worse.

Welcome to the public edjamacation program, known otherwise as the government lemon factory, i.e. your local public school. Of course, if you show up to take your kid out of class that day, you'll probably have the doors locked on you, and the cops phoned in to escort you off the property.
