Sen. Edward M. Kennedy underwent what his doctors called successful surgery Monday to treat his cancerous brain tumor, and told his wife shortly after that he felt "like a million bucks," a family spokeswoman said.

The surgery at Duke University Medical Center took about 3 1/2 hours. He is expected to undergo chemotherapy and radiation in coming weeks, and will remain at the North Carolina facility for about a week.

The 76-year-old Massachusetts Democrat was diagnosed last month with a malignant glioma, a lethal type of brain tumor. Experts had said Dr. Allan Friedman -- the top neurosurgeon at Duke and an internationally known tumor and vascular surgeon -- was likely try to remove as much of the tumor as possible while balancing the risk of harming healthy brain tissue that affects movement and speech.

He'll meet his maker and be judged soon enough. I'm not qualified or particularly interested in doing so. Not gonna with his death on him, no matter what kind of personal flews I think he has.

I always find people jumping to conclusions when they hear "The surgery was successful" when it comes to cancer surgeries.

All it means is that he didn't die in surgery.

It means zilch in relation to whether or not his cancer will kill him in a year or two.

Now, if the headline in coming months says "The TREATMENTS have been successful" then that would be a different story.

Kennedy will be soon too. Like schmessy said, successfully removing a tumor is one thing, removing all cancer, including recurrences is another order of magnitude.

You're right. In the case of treating glioblastoma it is never successful in removing all cancer cells, all it does is prolong the patient's life, sometimes a couple months, sometimes a couple years depending on what stage its at. Also treatment for glioblastoma is pretty much never successful either, it does not respond well to traditional therapy or even newer drugs on the market.

What I do not get here, is that Boston is a great city for treating cancer, yet he went to Duke?? I know he is a rich man and can do pretty much as he pleases.. this makes little sense, I wish him well and all that but why Duke?? It seems as though he is snubbing the hub..

Every cancer is different and the 'best' in each specialty may be in a different location, be it Boston and Dana Farber, Sloan Kettering in NYC, Mayo clinic, Cleveland clinic, M.D. Anderson in Texas,Fox Chase in Philly, Hutchinson in Seattle or in this case for this type of cancer, Duke.

The issue I have is that this is a "man of the people", but he gets preferential health care.. if I had brain cancer quite sure my health insurance would not allow me to shop around for the best tx.. I would be limited to RI resources and not be able to avail myself of national choices..

If you are a carpenter or a plumber no matter what the socialist liberals tell you, you will never have the Health Care the millionaires have, money talks ***** walks all over the world.

If I had the type of cancer this man has I would be looking for Dr Kevourkian, I wouldn't want my family to go through what these people have coming down the line nor would I want to live thinking about it everyday (that I could think)

Kevorkian was a man of the future.

But of course I am already "crazy".
