If you are on unemployment every year, maybe you are not too good at
your trade. I know a lot of union workers who work year round. If you are
not good at your trade, maybe you should go find a new line of work.
Hit the pavement and go interview.

Why don't they have a limit as to how often a worker can go on unemployment? The idea that an employee can go on spend 10 years of
a 25 year career on unemployment is unacceptable.

When someone who has lost their job for the first time in their career
hits unemployment (after working for 25 years) they should be entitled
to more than 30 weeks on unemployment considering the amount of money
that has been contributed in their name to the fund.
Maybe you would like the steel workers to work in the middle of january... it is what it is, unemployment does pay people what they normally earn.. the reality is that the businesses they work for shut down, whether you want to believe this or not they are skilled workers.. how about they are steel workers for 10 months and waitpersons for two..

It may be unnacceptable to you, but it is a way of life for thousands... if you asked them, sure they would like to get the prevailing wage 12 months of the year.. but it is not possible here. Unemployment barely pays the bills.

My best friends brother is an iron worker who has worked year round for the past 20 years. This year he got layed off for the first time since he became
a journeyman. He has a family of 4 children, so he made a few calls and found a job in Brooklyn New York that he worked for a couple months until he got a call to go back to work in Boston. He stayed in Brooklyn during the week and drove home Friday night and to Brooklyn real early Monday morning.

I also know other Iron workers who request a layoff when they know they
have earned enough time to collect. These are the people that are eating
up the funds because they spend 5 to 6 months on the dole while other
guys go out and search for work.

I respect guys that hunt for work, but I cannot help but question the ones
that are on unemployment as soon as they have enough hours earned.

If they would change the rules, the people who actually need the program
would not be cutoff after 30 weeks.

All people on unemployment should be treated the same.

If I went on unemployment they would make me attend a manditory training session and I would have to provide a list of places I went to interview.
I would probably have a problem because I would need to rely on a head
hunter to get me an interview.

If I would have to hit the pavement..... The Unions should also have to
hit the pavement.

All should be treated equal.

They should also limit how often the union workers go on unemployment or
the unions should pay a higher rate toward unemployment for their workers
because they use the majority of the funds.

Do not blame unions because of a federal/state system.. they did not create the system, they just play it.. if you want to argue intelligently you need to provide something more than personal experience or anecdotal evidence..

Unions don't pay anything towards unemployment, the workers and companies do.. you are looking to blame unions for a long term systemic problem.. most of what is dicated to this system is determined by the folks inside the beltway.

GJAJ15.... I respect your opinion as much as anyone on these boards.
You always bring the facts to the table and you don't always lean to the
same direction.

I feel that pointing out that the unemployment systems flaws speak for itself.
I should not have to produce a link to voice my opinion on common sense
issues.

Maybe I am wrong to point my finger at the unions, but considering the money that they throw at the democratic party, I am not suprised that
the system is setup to favor them.

My original post indicated that I did not have all the facts on this issue and
I welcomed input. I appreciate your input and view, but I still feel that
there should be limits on how often they can use the system. I also
feel that whoever contributes to unemployment for union members should
pay a higher rate than companies that keep their employees on the books
year round.

If I had a oceanfront house in Scituate, I would pay a higher rate for
home owners insurance than someone who lived in a more expensive house
in Lincoln.
