It may be unnacceptable to you, but it is a way of life for thousands... if you asked them, sure they would like to get the prevailing wage 12 months of the year.. but it is not possible here. Unemployment barely pays the bills.

My best friends brother is an iron worker who has worked year round for the past 20 years. This year he got layed off for the first time since he became
a journeyman. He has a family of 4 children, so he made a few calls and found a job in Brooklyn New York that he worked for a couple months until he got a call to go back to work in Boston. He stayed in Brooklyn during the week and drove home Friday night and to Brooklyn real early Monday morning.
I also know other Iron workers who request a layoff when they know they
have earned enough time to collect. These are the people that are eating
up the funds because they spend 5 to 6 months on the dole while other
guys go out and search for work.
I respect guys that hunt for work, but I cannot help but question the ones
that are on unemployment as soon as they have enough hours earned.
If they would change the rules, the people who actually need the program
would not be cutoff after 30 weeks.
All people on unemployment should be treated the same.
If I went on unemployment they would make me attend a manditory training session and I would have to provide a list of places I went to interview.
I would probably have a problem because I would need to rely on a head
hunter to get me an interview.
If I would have to hit the pavement..... The Unions should also have to
hit the pavement.
All should be treated equal.
They should also limit how often the union workers go on unemployment or
the unions should pay a higher rate toward unemployment for their workers
because they use the majority of the funds.
