FP: So what do you see as the core problem of an "American Left"? Flynn: America seemingly stands for faith, freedom, flag, and family. The Left often defines itself against all that. The eternal dilemma of the American Left is whether to appeal to America at the cost of doctrinal purity, or stay pure to ideology at the cost of alienating Americans. Whether social gospel ministers employing religion for leftist ends, Edward Bellamy and the progressives who followed appealing to patriotism, or Appeal to Reason's J.A. Wayland using his skills as a capitalist to promote socialism in his wildly successful newspaper, American leftists have often attained great circulation for their ideas by paying homage to American cultural markers. Purer-than-thou leftists, on the other hand, have denounced such leftists as imposters, fakers, and frauds.
FP: Historical amnesia is clearly required to propel the Left. Can you illuminate the roots of this phenomenon? Flynn: The Left counts on Americans to forget history. When Americans don't, they whitewash their mistakes and crimes through attempts, usually successful, to rewrite history. I view it as my job to conserve the history the Left obscures. One needn't go back hundreds of years for successful rewrites of history by the Left. Let's get an example from our lifetime. In the late 1970s, Mother Jones and The Nation fawned over Ayatollah Khomeini and the Islamic Revolution in Iran . "What kind of state might result if Khomeini or his followers take power?," Mother Jones asked in 1979. The magazine answered by citing "democratic reforms, freedom for political prisoners, an end to the astronomical waste of huge arms purchases, and a constitutional government." The prediction couldn't have turned out more wrong. One can see from such examples, and there are many of them in "A Conservative History of the American Left," why radicals run from their own history.
FP: Can you talk a bit about the transformation of a religious Left into an irreligious Left? Flynn: The example of 19th-century Christian communists--the Harmonists, the Shakers, the Zoarites, etc.--inspired secular leftists. Leftists saw the Christians living communally, rebelling against traditional religion, attacking the institution of marriage, embracing pacificism, and practicing it-takes-a-village child rearing. They liked what they saw and they imitated. A "religious Left," then, was once alive and well. It's hard to imagine Michael Moore's political antecedents as Bible thumpers, but it's true--however troubling to Moore and current Bible thumpers.
The Social Gospel, in particular, transformed many Christians into socialists (and brought but few socialists into Christianity). A religion obsessed with the material has little time for the spiritual. Social gospel ministers, then, reached for more social, less gospel. The apostles warned against such a phenomenon in the Book of Acts: "And in those days, the number of disciples increasing, there arose a murmuring of the Greeks against the Hebrews, for that their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then, the twelve, calling together the multitude of the disciples, said: It is not reason that we should leave the word of God and serve tables." But "serving tables," i.e. its social utility, is how much of the Left, including the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, seem to think religion is for.

Really great wright wing blog, by a conservative american who advocates for continued divisiveness in this country.. without regard, here is a great comment by the beloved and widely circulated "Front Page":
"Historical amnesia is clearly required to propel the Left."
Might I suggest that this is not the dominion of the left, but of both parties and politics in general.. for a responsible journal to initiate a question with this statement clearly delineates its expected response.. this is all crap, pure unadulterated crap.. maybe "Little Green Footballs" could do it better.
“We like to say that dependability is more important than ability,” Bill Belichickism....
Look like you hit a nerve with our resident communist, errr "progressive' posters. It is amazing how much the lefties hate Horowitz since he grew up in the movement and was a leader in the 60's.
"Some guys play in all-star games, some guys don't. I don't know who picks all those all-star teams. In all honesty, I don't know who picks the combine, for that matter," Belichick said. "How does (Miami-Ohio offensive lineman Brandon) Brooks not get invited to the combine? How did Vollmer not get invited to the combine? I don't know. We can't really worry about that. We just have to try to evaluate them the best we can."
