Default Experimental Aircraft to Go From Zero to 13,000 in Hypersonic Test Launch

Experimental Aircraft to Go From Zero to 13,000 in Hypersonic Test Launch - FoxNews.com

The goal of the second flight is to "validate our assumptions and gain further insight into extremely high Mach regimes that we cannot fully replicate on the ground," Air Force Maj. Chris Schulz said in a DARPA news release.

The goal of the project is to eventually enable the U.S. military to strike anywhere in the world in less than an hour.

Great....
Never know when we'll have to attack a target in Asia within the hour. Now we can toss those crappy Trident missiles and the Ohoi class sub fleet!...YAH! This should prove very useful in TWOT.

Now all we have to do is raise the retirement age another 4 months to pay for it...

An hour is too long, I'd like to see us spend a few more billion to get this thing cut to 30 minutes.

America! we don't do a lot right, but we can still blow $#!t up!

What's even better is that we will likely give away the technology to the Chinese in a few years (if we haven't already).

You're right. I missed that...

That means it must be "more right-wing hysteria from the corporatist fundamentalist pseudo-terrorist Tea Party channel".

Think positively guys, sure it could bomb China in less than an hour; but with luck all this tech will ever do is enable us to get to a Superbowl held in Pasadena in six minutes.

GPS was designed to let us put a nuke through a window in the Kremlin(the first satellite went up in 1978) what it has done is allow me to throw away my map book.

Woops, I think the plan was to let it crash into the ocean anyway?

Quote:
DARPA, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, has lost contact with its experimental Falcon hypersonic glider during a flight test.

DARPA announced on Twitter (@DARPA_News) that it had “lost telemetry” with its Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2).

The U.S. military's hypersonic glider was launched Thursday from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California aboard an Air Force Minotaur IV rocket, and has the capacity to glide at the far reaches of the Earth’s atmosphere at Mach 20, or 13,000 mph, making it the fastest plane ever.

The Falcon HTV-2 flies so fast that it could travel from New York to Los Angeles in just 12 minutes, CNET says.

DARPA tweeted the glider’s progress Thursday morning, first announcing the plane's successful separation from the Minotaur rocket before later breaking the news that “range assets have lost telemetry” with the HTV-2

DARPA said in a tweet that: “Downrange assets did not reacquire tracking or telemetry. HTV-2 has an autonomous flight termination capability. More to follow.”

This was the second of more than 20 planned tests aimed at advancing “critical technologies to make long-duration hypersonic flight a reality,” DARPA said, according to USA Today.

The first test in April 2010 lasted only nine minutes before contact was lost — possibly due to overheating — forcing operators to execute a "controlled descent into the ocean,” USA Today says.

Money well spent.

I don't even wanna look at what it costs to launch this thing....fly it for 9 minutes, then crash it in the ocean.
