Ahmed Khalaf, a lieutenant in the Syrian army said that he was ordered to command his soldiers to shoot indiscriminately at everyone in Deraa, including women and children, London based Asharq Alawsat reported on Saturday.
"I, along with other officers, was ordered by our commanders to commit genocide in Deraa and was told not to spare women and children."
Quote:
In an interview with Asharq Alawsat, Khalaf claimed that he told his commander that he followed orders while secretly telling his soldiers not to fire on anyone. However, when he was found out and put under house arrest he understood that he had to flee the country.
Khalaf explained that hundreds of Sunni officers are sitting in jails around Syria for refusing to obey orders to fire on civilians, and claims that "4,500 soldiers have defected in the Damascus area."

I always get a kick out of "Americans ordered out of Arab country" because I wonder why any American would even want to be in an Arab country....actually, I wonder why anyone would want to be in an Arab country.
Maybe some people like living cesspools...

Or maybe they have business interests or are career politicians...
There are american communities in Saudi, Istanbul is a wonderful city, Dubai attracts the rich and famous, Morrocco is interesting there are more..
Not every Arab country is a "cesspool"...

Food from this area of the world is the bomb.. many of my faves originate in this region. Hummus, Falafel, Yogurt et al, are not only good but good for you.

I get your point Darryl...but I was referring to why any American would want to LIVE in Syria (unless you're Syrian).
My brother's wife is half Syrian and her mother makes all the stuff you listed. But she also makes the best pastries I've ever had!

I had a Syrian friend when I was younger. Like many old school families you could not enter that house without eating. The Syrians can seriously cook and eat - real good food without a doubt.

To suggest that all Arab countries are cesspools comes close to crossing the line in my opinion, but more importantly it reveals how ignorant you are of the Arab world.

There used to be a Syrian Bakery in Fall River, great meat pies and really great spinach pies.. used to make the trip specifically for those treats.
Simple, very tasty food.. hardly a cesspool.
