Default Socialized Medicine: I thought it was free?

Here's a truly eye opening article about socialized medicine in England. It seems people end up having to pay for their medicines & treatments, since the government won't. Some patients even have to sell their homes in order to get drugs for cancer treatment. Others pay for their own MRI's (I told you all what an English doctor said to my bro and his US dr. about England and MRI's) because the wait is too long to get one when they need it. This is a really scary read, but nothing I didn't know already in my experinces with Italy's government run health care.

Paying Patients Test British Health Care System

Britain’s National Health Service would not let Debbie Hirst, who has breast cancer, pay privately for extra cancer drugs that she needed without paying privately for all of her treatment.

LONDON — Created 60 years ago...

Quote:
One such case was Debbie Hirst’s. Her breast cancer had metastasized, and the health service would not provide her with Avastin, a drug that is widely used in the United States and Europe to keep such cancers at bay. So, with her oncologist’s support, she decided last year to try to pay the $120,000 cost herself, while continuing with the rest of her publicly financed treatment.

By December, she had raised $20,000 and was preparing to sell her house to raise more. But then the government, which had tacitly allowed such arrangements before, put its foot down. Mrs. Hirst heard the news from her doctor. “He looked at me and said: ‘I’m so sorry, Debbie. I’ve had my wrists slapped from the people upstairs, and I can no longer offer you that service,’ ” Mrs. Hirst said in an interview. “I said, ‘Where does that leave me?’ He said, ‘If you pay for Avastin, you’ll have to pay for everything’ ” — in other words, for all her cancer treatment, far more than she could afford.
Quote:
“Or they’ll buy an M.R.I. scan because the wait is so long, and then take the results back to the N.H.S.,” Dr. Charlson said.

In his paper, he also wrote about a 46-year-old woman with breast cancer who paid $250 for a second opinion when the health service refused to provide her with one; an elderly man who spent thousands of dollars on a new hearing aid instead of enduring a yearlong wait on the health service; and a 29-year-old woman who, with her doctor’s blessing, bought a three-month supply of Tarceva, a drug to treat pancreatic cancer, for more than $6,000 on the Internet because she could not get it through the N.H.S.

I always laugh when I hear people say they're going to vote for Obama because they want "free" healthcare. We're so ignorant in this country it's laughable.

I've been to Italy about 30 times in my life. Half my family lives there, and I've got childhood friends there, just like I've got here. Trust me when I tell you all that you don't want socialized medicine. The hospitals kill more people than they cure.

"Freedom ain't free.....it costs folks like you and me........Oooohhhhhh-ohhhhh-ohhh... BUCK-O-five!"

I agree that peeps distort "free" healthcare with universal coverage. But then again, almost every issue comes down to a distortion of the facts by those who profit or benefit from each side. I'd like to pay more out of my check so that others could get healthcare, especially children. But that doesn't mean that everyone agrees with me. Listen, we all pay social security, it has become an accepted expense. Soon healthcare will find a balance, its just the right thing to do, in my opinion.

The Only Reason The Left Wing Democrats Want Socialized Medicine Is Because Freedom Loving Right Wing Neo Cons Don't Want It.

The bastards want to get right into your home and run every aspect of your life.

Never forget the title of Pant Suit Hillary's Book "IT TAKES A VILLAGE"
F-ck You And Your Village Hillary and F-ck you too Obooma, this is America, we are still free to choose and speak our minds and I will choose my own Doctor for myself and my family. I don't want one of your government back room meat cutters treating my family.

The poor already have Medicade and they now get better health care than I do.

As I posted on a thread a while ago -

My mom has ovarian cancer. They just put her on some new drug, I forget the name. Well one of our relatives in England is a cancer specialist. She told him what they'd put her on and he told her it's a real good drug but they can't get it over there because it's too expensive.

Argue however you want about "it's the right thing to do" (which I disagree with) but it's pretty much not arguable that health coverage will go down unless, as RW's point is, you pay a lot more for the good stuff.

Re-reading, btw, I think Avastin is the drug my mom is now on; funny coincidence

I don't think it's wrong to want everyone to have access to healthcare. I just don't want the government taking it over, or getting involved as it doesi n other countries, cuz I've seen first hand what it would mean. The hospital system in Italy killed my aunt. She lived here for 30 years without issue, as a diabetic, and died after the hospital system F'd up her care, a couple of years after she moved back there. My grandma had to buy all types of medicines because the "free" coverage didn't give her any of the medicines she needed. When she came here for care (my grams was a US citizen), she never felt better. Of course, she went back after 2 years, and she never felt worse. Something needs to be done because coverage is getting ridiculously expensive, but government control is not the answer.

agreed....

but as it stands now, an INSURANCE company decides what kind of coverage you get. That makes no sense either.

Government-run healthcare, in a country this size and economic type, would be a logistical nightmare. Something should be done, and i don't have a problem giving a portion of my check to the Feds for things like roads, military, and healthcare/welfare for those who truly need it. They just take too much now given what they do with it, and healthcare will give them an excuse to make more, without having to look at their already horrendous spending habits.

Go out on a busy street in America, fall down and FAKE a Heart Attack you will be transported in the Finest Best Equipted Ambulance available anywhere in the world, you will be treated by the BEST medical emergency people in the world, when you arrive at the hospital you will have the best physical examination you have ever had in your life, when it is all over and they tell you there is nothing wrong with you, tell them you have no insurance and you aren't working, then you can go home, you live in the greatest country in the world.

If you want the best physical examination that is offered anywhere on this planet for free then I suggest after you read this put your coat on, go to the supermarket then go to the produce dept, make sure there are some other people around then grab your chest, fall down and start gasping and yelling, you will soon be on your way to your "Free Physical" one just as good as the President gets.

God Bless The United States Of America.
