This part of the thread actually could be interesting.
What values are those that theoretically would undermine the long-term success of capitalism?
Read the book, my friend.
Or go to Newport, Rhode Island, and view the mansions along Cliff Walk and realize that they were built by descendants of Puritans.
Where once religion told one to reinvest the money and grow the business, human nature says, "Let's live a little."
And this thread, notwithstanding carping by intellectual pygmies, is indeed interesting.

Yes, if building Newport Mansions is your standard perhaps look to the descendents of the Puritans.
But, if music, good food, love and fun, respect for all sorts of people, exposure to all sorts of experiences, is your standard then look elsewhere. And, I'll maintain capitalism has fared better more thanks to the new values that embrace multiple lifestyles than because of the Puritans. The Puritans were never good for our economy. It was our largely secular founders who were thinkers who put in place the system by which all people have the possibility of prospering, even if they're not Puritan.
Or if you point is that you measure happiness by wealth, then perhaps it reflects on the narrowness of your own cultural and intellectual upbringing. Intellectual pygmies, please, your post reads like something out of the nineteenth century.

And yours reads like something out of Mother Russia.

Your comment would make sense if your view of Mother Russia was that it offered respect for all sorts of people, had freedom from censorship, and had equality, but I'm not surprised you consider such things Communistic.

Whatever you say, tovarich. Power to the people, raise taxes on the rich, down with religion, etc, etc.
Man/Man couples and Women/Women couples do not produce many
Children.
With todays science it is possible "Doners/Surrogates", but I don't thing the technoligy has been around long enough for teenagers. Sure today they can adopt, but I have a feeling that there will still be far less teenagers in Provincetown than Hyannis.
Ptown or elsewhere, why has this thread such a freaking powder keg? We can blame Reagan or Bush depending on politics if it makes anyone feel better, sheesh
I still remember my first job. The Hasty Freeze was a busy drive-in restaurant in my hometown. Like my teen co-workers, I learned the value of being a team player, getting to work on time, and delivering excellent customer service. These are just a few of the skills young workers need to acquire to be successful in the workplace. Many teens of my generation learned these basic and essential job skills in low wage, low skill jobs – but these were valuable lessons in work ethic that I have used throughout my life. As a workforce analyst, I find myself referring back to these basic skills as the foundations of my career, and for that reason, I am an avid supporter of young people in the workplace.
In recent years, teen participation in the labor force has trended downward (Graph 1). Last year, about 41 percent of the nation's 16 to 19 year olds participated in the labor force; in contrast, 58 percent of this age group was active in the labor force in 1979.
I guess Titus Pullo, who emotes rather than thinks, didn't get my more recent point that it makes sense for a native-born teenager from 40 miles away to do the work that someone on a J-1 or H-2B visa from Bulgaria, some thousands of miles away, is currently doing.
Aren't there thousands of students attending university in the Boston area? The construction industry isn't what it used to be. If one is willing to work very hard, even in retail, one can make decent money.
An area's newspaper, the Cape Cod Times, doesn't even list jobs. Businesses would rather pay low-wages to foreigners who don't kvetch and work hard, than roll the dice on native young people.
Nevermind that your original post reads like some screed from Marcus Bachman, but considering I said "OP", not "State," .... then "was" works just as well. But if you wish to get into petty grammatical squabbles on a football message board, we can do that. No problem, because you produce plenty of fodder there.
You obviously couldn't handle the business and had to get out. Not that anyone here has any illusions that you were "honest" or "good" as a "reporter." Evidenced by your profound lack of basic knowledge regarding the topic you're trying to write about. If you had any skill in research, you'd have an understanding of the limitations to Cape teens.
What you've essentially produced here, cool guy, is more conservative pablum, where you advocate the "virtue" of hard work for laughably low wages. You know, that foundation that keeps your team afloat. So you praise the initiative of foreigners here on a work Visa, willing to live in the most destitute of Cape life conditions for a chance to stick. Of course, you're the same kind of poster who's usually demanding a fence for Mexicans and resisting an increase in minimum wage.
The Cape is inundated with European, Russian and Brazilian workers. Has been for over 10 years. Meanwhile, the school systems are shrinking rapidly since the housing bubble. You'd know that if you had a clue what you were talking about.
