I thought I'd get us riled up some more than we already are

Nice prison, yes, cushy even. More toys there than I have here at home........certainly much more plush than any cell block here in the USA.

And yet Norway's recidivism rate hovers around 20% while our own national rate is more than twice that at somewhere between 50 - 60%.

If we had prisons like that we might jump up to 80%. Life would better on the inside then in the streets many ex-cons go back to here. But as has been pointed out frequently this week, Norway doesn't house many violent career criminal types. It would be an interesting test to build a prison modeled after this one, complete with the same rehabilitation programs to see if it made a difference here.

Will never happen in the US, unless you are a white collar criminal.

Most would prefer the prototypical Eastern State Penitentiary Model..

Interesting point about the white collar criminals. Maybe that's the very face of the criminal population in Norway and if it is it explains how such a prism system can exist.

Low, practically non existent crime denotes a lesser response by the criminal justice system. Suspect that Breivik will not have it all that "posh", probably more on the draconian side...

Personally, I'll be surprised if he ends up anywhere but in a mental institution.

After all, we've almost all agreed he's insane, haven't we?

Not sure I know enough about him, seems to be driven by extreme ideology more than anything else.. of course they will try to go this way, but not sure it will fly. The mixture of anabolic steroids into this mess may prove interesting.

Several psychiatrists may know better..

Norway is a small country unprepared for the insanity of extremism. This tragedy will probably force the Norwegians to make some changes.

When I lived in Norway, the top heroin dealer escaped. How did he escape? He asked to go out to dinner for his birthday, and was escorted by a couple guards. At the restaurant, he used the mens room and climbed through the window. (He was caught a year later in Amsterdam.) In another instance, a major bootleg alcohol dealer disappeared for a month. How did he disappear? He was granted permission to take a vacation with his family, and decided to go to Denmark. The Norwegians didn't know where he was. (He returned to prison after his vacation.) In another instance, two thieves stole priceless Edvard Munch paintings. How did they commit such a brazen robbery? They put a ladder up to the window of the National Museum, climbed it, broke the window, and took the paintings. (The paintings were recovered several months later.)

Just as we learned from 9/11, Norway will learn from the tragedy. I doubt very much Breivik will be living the good life.
