1.) Cut defense budget by 40 percent
2.) End combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan (technically done with the former)
3.) Implement cost controls in the ACA and strengthen/amend where necessary
4.) Allow Bush tax cuts to expire

There goes the deficit.

Oh, by the way, Boehner just walked away from the "Grand Bargain" of ~4T in deficit reduction, and is now advocating passage of a more modest package of ~2T.

Crazy thought, I know. But the Pentagon got a nice raise again this year from the GOP House, the only government entity to receive such. Shocking. Meanwhile, we have states shutting down, amid an unprecedented era of "austerity" measures. Such priorities.

Cut defense, and all this "tax" goofiness becomes moot. And the rich can keep their money.

Cons can't have everything. They can't starve the poor, privatize every sector, hoard their money AND justify bloated defense spending.

While I agree with you ... we need to also cut defense - we need to cut everything really.

Why is it that democrats want to cut defense but keep insisting we need to spend our way out to a recovery? Obama wants to keep spending to fuel the recovery - cutting defense spending makes no sense from that point of view. He is expanding our role in being the world's vice principal - at the same time he wants to cut defense spending - but he wants to keep spending to a recovery?

He really needs to put all this together before he speaks IMO.

Again I make clear though that I agree defense spending IMO should be cut like everything else.

I daresay not nearly as much of a percentage as I would advocate they be cut.

Icy, we literally ARE cutting everything. Except defense. That's the whole point.

This country is on the brink of bankruptcy. Hell, only 49 states are actually in operation right now, and several others are on the runway for shutdown in the coming few years.

That's a real problem.

The Chinese and Russians could dump our T-bills tomorrow and we'd be bent wide over. We all realize how over leveraged America is right now, yes?

The U.S. economy is hanging by a thread. That's why it's attempting desperate gimmick tricks like releasing a half day's worth of oil reserves to create the illusion that oil markets can calm down.

I'll tell you why the Pentagon is the only federal entity that got a raise: It's because we've mismanaged our future so badly the past 20 years, we're completely ****ed, ... and the military is the last trump card we have to play.
