Why, if their job creation is so good and their unemployment figures lower than the national average (although not the lowest by far) are there so many people living below the poverty level in Texas?
Without looking into it I would guess it is the immigrant population that comes here poor - looking for work and a better life.

So to sum up it's job creation numbers when we're counting Texas jobs, and net jobs when we're counting any other state.
Call me when you have real numbers.
As to this:
Depends on the mechanism.
Let's say there is no national minimum wage, and one state says "Hey company A! We want your jobs! You can pay your guys $1 an hour in my state!"
Let's say all the other states have minimum wages ranging from $5 an hour on up.
Which state gets the jobs?
Can you say "race to the bottom"?
I doubt when you compare state minimum wages that Texas has a very good one, given the preponderance of really, really crappy wage rates in the Texan economy, from what the Mrs. posts.
I know a lot of people love the idea that "states can compete and that will prove which ideology wins." To me it's a recipe for everything from aberrantly low corporate taxes to aberrantly low wages for workers to aberrantly low safety standards in industry and capitalization requirements in the financial sector.
No wonder your favorite bogeymen -- job-stealin' Mexican illegal aliens -- don't stay in Texas after they get over the river.
Hell, may as well stay in Mexico if yer gonna do that, right?
Compare the cost of living in California to Texas. If it's significantly lower, then the wages they pay in Texas should be lower than what they were paying Californians.
My company adjusts pay according to where we live, not to align with what others in our company are making.

God Damn Texas
They should send their lawmakers up to Cambridge Ma, Berkley or Hollywood to learn how their state should really be run, they should also invite Jimmy Carter, Caroline Kennedy, Sharpton, Jessie Jackoff, Windbag Biden and Chris (Mush Mouth) Matthews down there for six months to set up their social structure (food stamps, welfare, sex life etc etc)

Looks as if the plan and trade offs didn't account for the baby boomer generation, and its payout of benefits, huh?
Looks like they also didn't foresee the concentration of wealth becoming more concentrated.
So here we are, More people retiring than ever before, more wealth being concentrated in fewer hands, that new income not contributing to the revenue problem with Social Security.....thus a social security gap.
sounds like a self-fulfilling prophecy.
social security would not have any liquidity issues if it wasn't for the fed govt raping it ever since the johnson administration.
technically, the SS trust should have a $13T sitting somewhere.....it does not.....it supposedly has $2T with $11T of govt IOUs that will never get paid back.
