Comcast plays nice in some area because there is competition, but if there is none, your only hope is the state or government shield.
Comcast charges much less in Cambridge, Chelsea, and Malden, where prices are still con*trolled by the govern*ment, the study said.
For example, basic cable in Cambridge costs $7.30 a month. In Boston, Comcast charges $15.80, up from $9.05 in 2008, accord*ing to the report.
In 2002, the FCC deregulated cable rates in Boston. The argument then was that new competition for Comcast would keep prices low. RCN had begun offering cable service in the city and had plans for an expansive network with more than 250,000 subscribers, according to the city’s petition with the FCC. Over the past decade, however, RCN has failed to grow significantly in Boston.
It currently has 15,000 subscribers, city officials said. Comcast remains the dominant force with 170,000 subscribers.
