The article is about the effect of the price of food in developing countries.

According to the F.A.O., food riots have erupted in recent months in Guinea, Mauritania, Mexico, Morocco, Senegal, Uzbekistan and Yemen.
It's only going to get worse as oil gets more expensive, causes mass migrations.

Sorta thought this would be coming the moment we discovered wealthy Americans could put food into gas tanks while people starve elsewhere.

By the way, 'Murkins, our own corn-based food -- which is pretty much everything -- is about to go way up in price too.

One good thing that is coming and will be more pronounced is that the high price of fuel makes these alternatives viable. IMO, that's why fuel will remain high in price but nowhere near where some predict ... they will not put themselves out of business IMO ... just rape us while they can. Imagine when the corn farmer is hated more than the oil sheiks of Saudi Arabia.

In retrospect, it seems so natural that looking into alternatives had to wait until oil/gasoline got so expensive that it's economically (almost) competitive to look into biodeisel, ethanol, etc. Of course, the French compressed-airmobile will probably make all this moot LOL...

Suddenly, these "unworkable" tech fixes aren't sci-fi. Suddenly, we all understand that energy portability is acheivable by methods other than millions of years of compression of rotted vegetation and fauna. "Wow, you mean we can just turn the carbon that grows today into something we can burn?"

Regardless, we'll need to fix the source energy problem eventually, or all the same malthusian economics kick in... especially in the case of burning food for mobility (even switchgrass takes arable land, that some low-quality food may grow on.)

I think the governemnt should be giving tax breaks to support the growth of hydroponics. Probably they will wait until it is too late like with oil. One resource that is always there is land ... it shrinks a bit to growth but there is alot of it ... especially in places that are lousy for food growth.
