Default Now Here's a Republican I Could Get Behind

Former senator Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.) didn't mince words in weighing in on the crop of Republicans mulling presidential campaigns for the next election cycle during an appearance on MSNBC's "Hardball" on Monday.

When asked for his assessment of the emerging GOP field by anchor Chris Matthews, the co-chair of President Obama's deficit commission didn't hold back in criticizing members of his party on social issues.

"Who the hell is for abortion?," asked Simpson, who has developed a reputation for making blunt and colorful remarks. "I don't know anybody running around with a sign that says, have an abortion, they're wonderful. They're hideous. But they're a deeply intimate and personal decision, and I don't think men legislators should even vote on the issue."

Simpson went on to address the issue of gay rights. "Then you've got homosexuality," he said. "You've got 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' We have homophobes in our party. That's disgusting to me. We're all human beings. We're all God's children. ... [Former Pennsylvania senator Rick] Santorum has said some cruel things, cruel, cruel things about homosexuals. Ask him about it. See if he attributes the cruelness of his remarks years ago. Foul."

"That's the kind of guys that are going to be on my ticket, you know, makes you sort out hard what Reagan said, you know, 'stick with your folks,'" explained Simpson to Matthews. "But I'm not sticking with people who are homophobic, anti-women, you know, moral values while you're diddling your secretary while you're giving a speech on moral values. Come on. Get off of it."

Good to know he's the co-chair on Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility.

Hmm. Sounds libertarian-y on the social issues.

If he is indeed libertarian in his views, you probably won't like his stance on government finances or other freedoms like gun ownership.

This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”

I'll let you know how I feel about his financial stance as things develop.

As for the freedoms like gun ownership you probably ought to ask first....I've owned guns since I was old enough to own guns - for years when I lived back in the Midwest I was an avid participant at a yearly Kentucky machine gun shoot.

I don't know. He was recently appointed to some type of financial committee by Obama. He wanted to cut aid to veterans who served in Vietnam.

Alan Simpson: Cut Veteran Disability Payments

I've heard of a group of six Senators (forgot what they call themselves) who are trying to work out a budget deal. One of them is (R) Coburn Oklahoma. I've also heard him speak, and liked what he said about debt and balancing the budget. But, I am sure you could find something he also said that wouldn't sit well with me.

I probably should ask first, but then again, that's why I qualified it with the word "probably". I was going off your posting history, which definitely fooled me.

Yeah, this is Alan Simpson of Simpson/Bowles commission fame. He's quite the pistol these days... If you remember the days before the "Let's compromise and add a trillion bucks to the debt" deal that resulted in cutting your social security tax to 4.2%, while giving the Bush cuts for the rich another year, back when we really cared for 15 minutes about the debt... he headed the commission that showed us what real austerity would look like (including brutal cuts everywhere -- no home mortgage deduction, higher retirement age, cuts to defense, no more cuts for the rich, yadda yadda yadda.) To their credit, the commission did a better job of directing at least some of the pain to the rich for once... but it was brutal to the middle class. Still, better than the tea party vision of wealth transfer to the already wealthy.

How does the tea party want to transfer money to the wealthy? The tea party simply wants people to keep more of what they've earned, and for the gubmit to spend less than it currently does. You and your ilk are the one's who want to transfer money from people who earn it, to people who haven't.

Really Alan? This guy sounds like one of those Nextel commercials. Like the one where the fireman are all dirty and posing as politicians and say "who wants clean water?", and they pound the gavel and say "we got clean water". As if it's as simple as that. So men shouldn't even vote on the issue?
