Default Discrimination Is Alive and Well - and Living In Atlantic City

Anyone who says that women don't face unique situations in the job market needs to rethink their position. There's not a man in the world who would work for 30+ years and then be terminated for no other reason than because his jowls sagged or he'd gained 20 pounds in the past three decades, or, God Forbid!! he was no longer 21 years old, and, in spite of the fact that he did a cracker-jackpot job and they'd be happy to place him in another venue, he just couldn't continue to work the same job in the same place because he "violated uniform standards." I'm pretty sure they'd damn well find a uniform which fit him. That's generally how it works with uniforms, they come in sizes.

I don't care what you all think about unions - I'm really glad these women have one and I'm really hoping they break the bank at Resorts Casino.

Fifteen ****tail waitresses were fired from their jobs at an Atlantic City resort because owners didn't like the way they looked in the new, skimpy costumes they had selected. The sacked servers were promptly replaced by new, younger, waitresses in their 20s.

In an effort to capitalize on the popularity of the hit TV show 'Boardwalk Empire,' the new owners of the Resorts Casino decided to give their facility a roaring-'20s theme, and outfit their ****tail waitresses in sexy, flapper costumes that are somewhat less than authentic.

Staff members were asked to try on the new costumes and have their pictures taken in them, but were given the impression they were doing this so they could give input on the new costumes in order to have something designed that would look good on everyone. One waitress reported they were asked to undress in front of six co-workers, including a manager, to model the costume, which couldn't be worn with a bra.

Once the 15 original ****tail waitresses had trained the newcomers, they were promptly fired. "I was brought up to the office and told I did not meet the requirements for the uniform and was let go," Kathryn Felici told Cathy Gandolfo of WPVI-TV, Philadelphia. The official word was "violating uniform standards."

Seeing how they weren't hired to wear sexy outfits I think they have a case but I can see how if they were and they knew their appearance was part of the job then they wouldn't. I'm sure males hired to model certain kinds of dress have to maintain physical standards to model those clothes.....but to suddenly change the job description is wrong

Men won't often lose jobs because of their looks, but at the same time, men won't often get jobs because of their looks, either. Double-eged sword?

In this case, it sounds like the women fired should have been treaed much better -- tried to find other jobs, or handled the firing better if it were necessary. But I don't think there's anything wrong with new waitresses being hired because the business is changing its model.

Here's a bit more detail about the "selection" process:

All of the 16 women who lost their jobs were middle-age, long-time employees who were happy to retain their jobs after the casino's sale only to lose them because of their appearances in a skimpy costume.

Union officials say that Resorts is using the 1920s flapper-style uniforms as a way to get rid of older ****tail waitresses in order to cultivate a younger clientele.

One of the fired waitresses, Nancy Schromsky, said the process of being judged in the uniform was humiliating.

The women were directed to a room where the new uniforms were strewn about the floor and told to try one on and then be photographed.

Schromsky said the only sizes to be found were size 2 and 4

I should have gone to law school. Sometimes it is like walking over to the corner of the room to pick up a pile of money that some dumb company left there for you.

I understand what you mean - but at the same time, what you say is not necessarily true. It's just that the men applying for the jobs don't know they're being assessed on their appearance like a woman applying for a job as a waitress might know.

A London Guildhall University survey of 11,000 33-year-olds found that unattractive men earned 15 percent less than those deemed attractive, while plain women earned 11 percent less than their prettier counterparts. In their report "Beauty, Productivity and Discrimination: Lawyers', Looks and Lucre," Hamermesh and Biddle found that the probability of a male attorney attaining early partnership directly correlates with how handsome he is.

Do Pretty People Earn More?

Be that as it may - if a company intends on employing only beautiful 20somethings then that company ought to have renewable contracts with an age limit built in - much like airline pilots do.

Some of these women have been there since 1978 - obviously they are good workers and they know their job well - well enough, in fact, that the new owners had them train their replacements before telling them that they were fired.

That's definitely the trend at my company. They want to get younger so that they can lean on the unsuspecting, eager recent grads to be married to their laptops and blackberries...those of us with experience are harder to motivate because we have learned that it doesn't pay off. Left unanswered is the question of whether somebody who does not yet know anything can be as productive (even if they work twice the hours).

I wasn't going to get into the fact that being attractive helps both men and women in jobs that seemingly don't have anything to do with appearance -- and that even those doing the promoting, etc. aren't generally aware of it.

In those cases, though, other men are likely the ones losing out.

In this case a contract may not have mattered, as it sounds like the casino was sold. Any intelligent lawyer would have a provision in place that the contract could be terminated upon events including the sale of the company.

Everything in this country is geared towards the 20 / 30 year old generation, thats where the money is, all fat people are good for in this day of "dude coolness" is a few laughs.

Fatso Kirstie Alley had the balls to waddle onto the stage and dance with some ass hole on "Dancing With The Stars" the fat bastard screwed up and they fell down, all 600 lbs of Alley fell right on top of the poor sap that was dancing with her I don't know how he survived it without having his spleen and his bowels crushed.

Dancing with Kirstie Alley must be like trying to waltz with a f-cking Water Buffalo.

She is actually a pretty good dancer, I think.
