This has a real Rwanda kind of feel to it. Friends of ours who live in Abidjan have been evacuated and the reports they are getting from friends in the area are not good.

Word is that they are planning to upgrade to "grave concern" when there are more mass graves.

It used to be that people wished their country had oil to make them a wealthier and more developed nation. Now, they wish they had it so the US would save them from their despotic and murderous regimes...Oh wait, that might not be good enough (see "History of US Foreign Policy)...there have to be thousands of dead...no wait...that's not enough either (see Sudan, Rwanda and Congo).

Maybe the chocolate supply disruption might save them.

But we're not in Libya for our oil as much as for our allies in Europe's oil. Shouldn't we also protect Europe's supply of chocolate as well? Huh? HUH?

I'd be very interested in the White House's response to the question: "The situation in the IC is much worse than Libya. Since you state that we're acting in North Africa for humanitarian reasons, how do you plan on helping the IC in West Africa?"

The UN and France are already intervening.

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) — A United Nations helicopter fired at strongman Laurent Gbagbo's forces on Monday as France authorized its military to take out his heavy weapons, an unprecedented escalation in the international community's efforts to oust the entrenched leader.

The office of French President Nicolas Sarkozy said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had requested France's military participation.

Presidents could avoid all of this if they would just tell the truth about the reasons for our military deployments. All but the most dim or ignorant realize the real geostrategic reasons for our selective involvement. Maybe if the President would simply level with American people on matters like this, we could begin to trust the office just a little more.
