Re: UN staff killed by Afghan mob enraged over Florida Quran burning
The same people who support the right to burn an american flag are
outraged at the burning of the quran.
I have a lot more respect for the American flag than I do for the quran.
I wouldn't burn the quran, but I wouldn't shed a tear over it either.

who, for example (other than Afghanis -- who I can't imagine you're referring to here)?
(and the 2 aren't inconsistent -- one can be outraged by something yet support the right for it to be done. have any of the people you're referring to said that people shouldn't have the right to burn the quran?)

Ok, then they do have extremist links? Mongo confused.

Hmm, not sure where I made a comparison to Christianity in my post...are we reading the same thread?

By the way, you had a comment earlier implying that some people deny there are violent strains of Muslims -- has anybody actually denied that?

The answer is respect their holy book..
If the response of (as you wrote) "common folk" who read such a holy book is to murder people who had nothing to do an incident, then why on earth respect their book?

I don't know how to define extremist links. I think many Muslims in that part of the world seem to be pretty extreme in their religious views. Of course, that may partly be my anti-religion bias. And if they're at an important shrine and listening to extremist mullahs?
Maybe they weren't part of an active terrorist / militant group, but they seem extreme to me.

That may have been unfair of me -- not referring to your post or this thread, more the ongoing "dialog", both in this forum and throughout the country.
As an atheist/agnostic, I'm just tired of the horrendous behavior from so many people in the name of religion (more from Muslims around the world) and in contradiction to their supposed religion (Muslims around the world, but more noticeable to me in day to day life from "Christians" here in the states).

I suppose we can expect fawning support if a group of Christians firebomb a mosque because Muslims destroyed an actual person (not just a book)?

Fair enough, but I was responding to an earlier post that said that they did not have any such links. Guess it's a matter of opinion at this point.

Out of curiosity, how do you know that the people you see behaving badly are Christians?

Those are the main facts we know about this.
What shocks me is that we have ANY member of our board actually defending the Muslim crowd and/or deflecting conversation from the issues above.
There is ZERO defense for these people, so how can anyone attempt to defend these savages?
Please, I'm dying to know
What is a savage? There's a song in the "Pocahontas" Disney movie called "Savages" that appropriately has both conflicted sides claiming the other is the "savages". Killing innocents with swords and rocks is no different outcome-wise as doing it with a cruise misslie or arial bombardment.

It was the basis of the American leaders' (ie: the corporate government and the corporate media) rationale for invading and occupying the Middle East. We constantly heard about this defense of "our way of life" and the "battle of cultures" and all that stuff. They are lies just as any religious organization uses. They are mythologies meant to distinguish one group from another. In America, the religion of capitalism has more than overtaken the religion of Jesus/Moses. I see no difference, culturally speaking, between the two. In fact, in America and Europe, the two have been morphed into one.
Feel free to debate my position. I would be interested to hear how anyone distinguishes one from the other using real-world concepts not based in supernatural stories.
The western tradition was built on 2 distinctly separate fundamental social mechanisms, religion & capitalism. And neither one was planned by anyone, it was just the way history unfolded.
As soon as you wrote "Capitalism is a religion", you lost all credibility in this debate. I suggest you study up on the definitions of "religion" and for "Types of Economic Systems". Wistah, if you're seriously attempting to argue capitalism is a religion, then all religions, economic & government systems become one...and that is a joke.
Religions & economic systems aren't one in the same....It can't even be debated
Were you out burning leaves today?
