Here's an oldie but along the same lines:

Some things naver change.
From a practical and responsible POV, I think the US should consider limitting immigration (cutting it down significantly) in order to control our growing population.
First of all, we can't afford to provide public $$ and housing to them on a large-scale basis. I'd prefer to see that money spent helping natural-born citizens finance their college education. That's a huge growing issue in our country.
Stopping "Illegal Immigration" should be priority #1. I don't think anyone can provide a logical, fact-based argument that supports NOT taking action on illegal immigration.
Also, on Legal immigration, if we don't have a policy on allowing a balanced influx of people from various areas of the world, we should start. In other words, we shouldn't allow 50% of our immigrants to be from South America, 20% from Europe, etc. I think the goal should be a balanced and diverse American society. So I don't think allowing one segment to grow faster than the others is a good idea.

If Americans and their owners were serious about controlling immigration they would. Americans do not want to pick lettuce and clean toilets (at least not yet) and their owners need someone who do. What is wrong with South Americans?

1 thing changed since that article, the welfare state and the cost associated with it. Earlier waves of immigration the newcomers had to work to eat and have a place to live now the option exist to live off other taxpayers.

I was in Market Basket today and of the 30 people around me in the different registers, maybe 5 spoke a dozen words of english or more. Forget that though, cuz maybe they're all here legally. The problem is that virtually everyone who couldn't speak english, was paying with WIC, EBT, food stamps...WTF is that? Why let people into this country if all they're going to do is cost the hard working money? If they aren't legal, which we know most aren't, then why are they getting freebies? Anyone ever ask Auntie Zuchinni that?

WIC is specifically for low income mothers and can only be used on milk, juice, cereal and dairy products... the thought is that healthy babies have less medical problems and this helps the US Dairy Industry...
EBT and Food Stamps, it is usually one or another, once again these programs are limited to groceries and benefit our agriculture industry.. the Food Stamp program is a program of the US Dept of Agriculture, and is administered by them. Did you ever think why???

South Americans were just an example. We shouldn't allow 50% of our immigrants to be from any particular area, including Europe. And based upon Real World, we definately don't want to increase our Italian population!
I think it's a practical goal to reduce immigration if it's costing us too much. How many immediately get federal support? I'm just throwing some ideas out there Wistah. I'm concerned about federal spending, illegal immigration and our growing population.

At some point, immigration can have negative financial effects upon our citizens. It's not the 1800's any more.
