I don't know of any law that says you must join a union. I think the situation is more like you just outlined, that the shop goes union, and suddenly you're "in" unless you leave to be "out."
I am also unclear on whether dues are deducted by law. I know where I work, there are many bargaining unit employees who don't pay dues.
Patters probably knows a heck of a lot more about labor laws than I do, but of course if anybody can cite a law that says someone must join a union, on threat of some kind of legal penalty, well I would like to see it too (regardless of who among us comes up with it.)
I hear you, when it comes down to individual range of choice versus how people add up in a data table... in any particular case I might have a "but" appended to this... but it's not like I don't get the desireability of personal liberty.
