Default Lets look in the mirror

We live in the most violent industrial nation in the World. The USA, unfortunately, leads the industrial world in murders, rapes, violent crimes, etc.

Why is that? The UK, Australia, and every other industrial nation doesn't even come close when in comes to those stats. Any thoughts on this?

That doesn't sound right -- what is your source, and how are they defining industrial nations?

The first thing to do would be to provide a source. Are you using Census stats, FBI stats, UN stats for international rates, etc.? I'm not trying to be difficult, but a frame of reference would be helpful.

This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”

A good question. Russia is pretty damned industrialized, and I know for a fact they have much higher crime rates, across the board.

I went to the FBI site but this link isn't working FBI — Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report, January-June, 2010

How any American can say that this isn't the most dangerous Country in the World is beyond me.

There is a lot of bad stuff going on here

Maybe because some of us have been to other places that seemed that they would be worse?

Since you're saying it is, you should be able to supply a source for your claim rather than express your bewilderment that anybody might disagree.

And you're now saying most dangerous in the world -- not industrialized. maybe that was a slip?

Regardless, I've been to parts of Africa that certainly seemed worse. and Central America. And I don't know whether Australia is truly an industrial nation (again, just wondering about your definition). Nikolai brings up Russia.

Sure, in absolute terms. We're a pretty big country.

In relative terms? Don't know -- need to see some data and figure out what we're actually talking about.

I know I've lived in 4 major cities, a couple suburban areas and a couple rural areas, and I've never been a victim of a violent crime (knock on wood). A friend was murdered many years ago. A few friends were mugged when we were living in NYC years ago.

Sadly, the crime I know of most is date rape -- several women I've known were raped in their teens and early 20s by classmates or other dates.

Some stats on murder to get ya started:

The US homicide rate, which has declined substantially since 1991, is still among the highest in the industrialized world. There were 17,034 murders in the United States in 2006[28] (666,160 murders from 1960 to 1996).[29] In 2004, there were 5.5 homicides for every 100,000 persons, roughly three times as high as Canada (1.9) and six times as high as Germany (0.9).Most industrialized countries had homicide rates below the 2.5 mark
