Not for nothing, but doesn't that show how naive, inexperienced, and ill prepared this guy was to be president? If people here on this board (yes I am patting myself on the back right now) knew this about Gitmo, then how could he not?
I'm ok with the existence of Gitmo, but I do understand why some people aren't. I also don't think the Constitution, or the Geneva convention applies to terrorists, or enemy combatants. That being said, I've said from day one that you can't incarcerate people indefinately without some form of due process. Rounding people up and holding them forever is flat wrong. The issue is complicated, but to me, either these prisoners are put to trial, or they should be released.
The whole experience has been naive and inexperienced, from the onset there should have been a bipartisan plan for all of the detainees, however there has been consistent infighting from the onset.. here we are 9.5 years later and it is still under discussion.
Decisions should not take this long.. do something and get it resolved.

I'd break the law to protect my family- I might even do it to protect a stranger. That's different. The government cannot do things that endanger the lives of my family though. Our foreign policy regarding the ME endangers all of us, IMO. Despite what the government tells us, it is still wrong to murder the tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis and Afghans because a few Saudis killed 2000 Americans. They want you to be afraid so they can continue the wrong-headed policy. I know soldiers who come home from Iraq and say "There are many over there who want to kill us. I've seen them." To which I say, "No ****. Any idea why that is?" They say "They hate our freedom". It's at that point I realize they are completely sold on the myth.
You prevent violent terrorism by securing the borders and ports and not ******* with other countries like they are animals. Read Washington't farewell address.
I agree, we definately have it backwards. Although I don't want terrorists full of hatred and revenge released, I also agree with your reasons why they are that way.
But there is another group of terrorist that truly believe that Islam/Allah want them kill "infidels/unbelievers". Those are the ones we can't change.
I like your comments on securing the borders & ports...man, our borders may as well be considered open. I can't believe more attacks haven't ocurred due to that.

Several Taliban detainees who had been captured in February after being observed placing bombs in the culverts of roads used by civilians and military convoys near Kandahar were fed, given medical treatment, then released by American troops frustrated by a policy they say is forcing them to kick loose enemies who are trying to kill them.
Despite what American soldiers say was a mountain of evidence, which included a video of the men planting the bomb and chemical traces found on their hands, there was nothing the soldiers who had captured them could do but feed and care for them for 96 hours and then set them free.
In another incident, members of a unit attached to 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment survived an attack by a suicide bomber on their convoy when his device failed to detonate. Soldiers managed to capture the would-be martyr, but he too was released after being held for four days.
"We put our lives on the line to capture the enemy," a soldier with the Stryker regiment told The Washington Examiner. "Since my deployment, every insurgent we've captured has been released."
Reporting from Washington—
He's considered one of world's most dangerous terrorism suspects, and the U.S. offered a $1-million reward for his capture in 2005. Intelligence experts say he's a master bomb maker and extremist leader who possesses a wealth of information about Al Qaeda-linked groups in Southeast Asia.
Yet the U.S. has made no move to interrogate or seek custody of Indonesian militant Umar Patek since he was apprehended this year by officials in Pakistan with the help of a CIA tip, U.S. and Pakistani officials say.
The little-known case highlights a sharp difference between President Obama's counter-terrorism policy and that of his predecessor, George W. Bush. Under Obama, the CIA has killed more people than it has captured, mainly through drone missile strikes in Pakistan's tribal areas. At the same time, it has stopped trying to detain or interrogate suspects caught abroad, except those captured in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"The CIA is out of the detention and interrogation business," said a U.S. official who is familiar with intelligence operations but was not authorized to speak publicly.
