Take a look at this link and you'll find a ranking report of the states with the highest tax burdens. But specifically look at the column labeled "Per Capita Income" because its an idiotic misrepresentation of the facts.
"Per Capita Income" is defined as "Income per person" in any given area. So this report has Per Capita Income for Massachusetts at $53k annually. Which would mean the average Massachusetts household income is well over $100K.
What this graph is actually showing is "average household income". Pretty sad mistake if you ask me...and many here complain about Fox
BTW...I paid about 9.5% of my GROSS income in state & local taxes (MA) last year.
Counting;
Federal
State
Local (property tax)
Soc Sec
Medicare
I paid 38% of my income in these taxes last year. That doesn't count all the sales, excise, utility, gasoline, toll and all other forms of "hidden" taxes we pay. So I paid well over 40% of my income in taxes in 2010.

Are you on a hunt for examples of CNN deliberately altering information so FOX doesn't look as bad? Why? Dan Rather got in trouble at CBS for the Bush AWOL stuff. How's that work for you? Better yet, how about all of the media being negligent going along with the government lies about Saddam to get over 4000 Americans and who-knows-how-many tens of thousands of Iraqis killed. Now there's bad journalism.
Nice stab at it, though.

Actually, I'm right on the money Wistah!
I do this for a living Wistah. The average household in MA is 2.51 people per household. So based upon CNN's data, that would translate to an average household income over $125K...and that's simply not even close to the truth.
Again, "Per Capita Income" means income per person....every single person including children and retirees. Don't believe me? Look it up!

I'm not "on the hunt" for anything Wistah. That's not my MO and never has been. I use reports like this in my job and I found this particular one to be wrong....very, very wrong.
Look at my post history. I like CNN Money and quote it all the time on this board.

OK. You get the high ground, but I want ANSWERS, DAMMIT! Now don't forget you're talking to a construction worker who got Cs in math and As in geometry.
How does household size relate to household income directly? Seems to me that there are too many variables. I looked at your link but I couldn't see any formula or explaination of "household income". How is that number calculated?

I take no satisfaction other than defending my point. You're smarter than me in many areas and maybe I got a couple over you...who cares. In the end, it's irrelevant to anything.
To get average household income, a state calculates the total income earned by it's citizens and then divides by the number our households (dwellings) that include houses, apartments, etc..
To calculate the Median Household income, they use a computer to calculate the mid point of all incomes in a state so you have an equal number of households above and below the median income.
In my opinion, it would be more useful to know what the average income is for anyone who "Has a job". Having many people unemployed drags down all the numbers in these statistics.
BTW...nothing is more valuable than common sense & an open mind. I think you were blessed with both Wistah!

Thanks for the compliment, PR. I'l forwarding that to the wife so she can keep it for reference next time I'm being stupid and narrow-minded.
I learned something. Now I can get back to work, what there is of it these days.
