Wow, how times have changed. I remember really loving my school lunches when I was a kid.

Remember the 40 year old government surplus canned and boxed/dried food left over from WWII, Korea, and the old fallout shelters from the Cold War?

Like that chipped dried beef? product in that slime sauce over rice starch product lumps? oof.

I would have loved fresh food for lunch. But they do need to use salt, sugar and other flavorants in moderation so it tastes good. The article is right. Eliminate the processed food and most of the sodium disappears.

Yeah, the food in my school was pretty nasty stuff. Even if you only ate half of it, you felt full and bloated all day (and I was a 6'4" D-lineman on the football team). Healthy alternatives are a good step, but I'm not sure I'd have full confidence that it would actually taste all that good.

Shirtsleeve is right though. The processed is chock full of sodium, which is fine if you're running 15 miles a day and drinking a few gallons of water. Somehow, I don't think that describes the average activity of students.

“On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson..they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sacks last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”

A vintage bottle Boons Farm Apple Wine circa 1971 (if one can be found)....it has a nice piquant aftertaste when paired with a steaming bowl of *****.

Nachos, pop tarts and doughnuts? Where were those when I was going to High School? All we got was awful shaved steak, American chop-suey, and a square piece of pizza that tasted like cardboard.

That sounds like our menu in Virginia circa 1995.
