Default Same Old Government - Just Like the Other One

The more things change the more they remain the same.

Early in 2010 Boehner called for greater television access to debate over President Obama's health care legislation saying, "Every issue of national import should be debated by the people's elected representatives in full public view."

New House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has denied a request by C-SPAN for permission to cover more of the debate on the House floor.

The public affairs network had sent Boehner a letter in November asking him to allow its cameras the freedom to capture wide shots of the chamber and also to catch lawmakers' reactions while their colleagues are holding forth. Currently C-SPAN is limited to static shots that are controlled by Congress.

Boehner responded via letter late Thursday, informing C-SPAN officials that their request would not be accommodated.

C-SPAN made similar requests to Republican Newt Gingrich in 1994 and Democrat Nancy Pelosi in 2006, as they prepared to take over as speaker. Those requests were also denied.

Mrs. PF - that is a biased story which left out a few things.

So ... in the spirit of more information here are a few more parts of the story.

C-SPAN denied cameras in the House of Representatives, again

In 1984 Newt let C-Span cover the chamber, but only who was speaking. So one day Newt let C-Span pan the floor to show a near empty chamber. That started a major fight and ...

Quote:
The ensuing fight only raised Gingrich's profile. ("I am now a famous person," he crowed.) So the wide-angle shots stayed until 1994, when Republicans and Democrats agreed to go back to only close-ups in the hope of making Congress look more dignified.
Quote:
Also that year, C-SPAN, trying to compete with other networks for viewers, asked if it could bring in its own cameras. Incoming Speaker Gingrich declined. His successor, Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), also did not allow C-SPAN's cameras in the chamber. In 2006, incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) followed suit.
Quote:
Boehner is allowing expanded television access. He's willing to let TV reporters into the chamber for special events and high-profile debates on a case-by-case basis, and he will let them have "stakeout" locations in heavily trafficked parts of the Capitol. But he drew the line at C-SPAN's request.

... and now you know the rest of the story.

I agree ... the house should let the camera's in but I think this is not just Boehner or the republicans who don't want it ... neither party wants it would be more accurate IMO.

What do congress critters sneering in the chamber have to do with the debate ie what is actually being said on the floor?

They sometimes use those opportunities to conduct business as many of them are there. Like one time Boehner was seen passing out checks from some lobby people. The impression I get is that they want to show it in a dignified way because it is way less than dignified most of the time.

We need to see congress criters snoozing?

I wouldn't mind CSpan broadcasting thing like the rules committee meetings, you know the ones that were secret when Obamacare was put together.

That of course is what Boehner was referring to. Libs as usual look only for the superfical to try to make an irrelevant point.

Really?

And why shouldn't we see people sleeping? Isn't that kind of an important statement in it's own way? I'd surely like to know if my congressman was asleep when an important bill was being discussed, wouldn't you?

Here's the letter in question - please point out where Boehner refers specifically to rules committee meetings and not just unrestricted access.

Please also show me where he's allowed any more access than before to anything at all.

It would be much appreciated if you could do so.

Thanks.
