Gov looking into tuition break for illegals

Posted by : Reynold Joseph

BOSTON (AP) -- Governor Deval Patrick says he's researching whether he can take unilateral action to allow illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at state colleges.

The governor made the comments while speaking to education and business leaders Thursday morning.

Patrick, who has long supported the idea, says his legal team is looking into whether the change can be made without approval from the Legislature.

House lawmakers soundly rejected in 2006 a bill that would let undocumented immigrant students pay in-state tuition.

Supporters argue that children of illegal immigrants who have graduated from Massachusetts high schools should pay the same tuition as their classmates.

But opponents say he state shouldn't be educating undocumented students so they can take higher paying jobs from legal residents.

Can we encourage illegal immigration and give advantage to those who don't follow the law?

YES WE CAN!

This is total bullsh-t! I'll join the protest on this one. I'm not subsidizing these people any more than I already am...not while they cut local aid to cities and towns because revenues and property values are dropping. Is he friggin nuts?

Yep, it was pretty much a choice between terrible and horrible.

I would expect no less from Deval "together we can" Patrick. When even the MA legislature won't pass something like this you KNOW its got to be bad.

Deval Patrick was the Obama for Massachusetts ... read'em and weep Taxachusetts residents ... you got what you voted for ... another liberal wacko.

As I have said before ... the only good liberal is one who is not an administrator or politician.

I would blame the people here more for electing Deval if the Republicans had put up a better candidate, but Kerry Healy had no shot to win. I was hopeful before the election that someone else would step up, but the party was content to let her run.

You're right, Deval, like Obama right now, ran only on vague ideas of "hope" and "togetherness" and "change." Deval never had to put forth any real policies, my hope is that Obama is challenged to do so at some point. I can tell you the first thing he has been more concrete on is not a winner, gov't health care with an added $50-$100 billion a year cost? Yikes. He should know Democrats are at least supposed to pretend all their programs aren't going to cost joe taxpayer a dollar more!
