another in a long line of examples regarding our slow decent into the police state... these changes don't happen over night... they are a gradual process of small steps...

Nothing to hide nothing to worry about.

If you plan on blowing up Chicago with a Back Pack Nuke then this might be a problem for you.

I notice lately that portable hard drives are the rage in Staples, Office Max and Best Buy. good for protecting your info and great for runing at full speed if needed ... I mean smaller than a laptop anyways.

I have to say I don't like this at all. Search my bags, fine, I could have explosives of drugs with me, but look at my files without any probable cause? No way. I can't see how that is being held up in court as legal. Any idea as to what legal precedent the judges that uphold it are using to say its OK?

Once Agian the news gets it wrong.......

This has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TSA!!!!!!!!

What they are talking about is CUstoms authority, and Customs Inspectors, or as they are now called CUstoms and Border Proection Officers.

This guy in the story was singled out for a secondary inspection because his name came up in a child porn investigation. And the property that he was bringing into the United States was searched UNDER THE AUTHORITY GIVEN TO CUSTOMS OFFICERS WHEN THE CUSTOMS SERVICE WAS FOUNDED IN 1795!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So this authority has nothing to do with the Bush adminstration, or the TSA, so the entire focus of the article is completely wrong and obviously baised. Just imagine who much other complete crap you read each day and take as gospel.

So no TSA is not going to begin to inspect your laptop hard drive, they legally can not do it!!!!!

What this is/was is a customs examination, it applies only when you are making entry into the United States, and in order to inspect a hard drive like this the inspector must have "articulable facts" that he can explain to his Superviosr as to why he wants to do this. They also have the power to, if after finding "articulable facts" they think that someone entering the country has condons full of cocaine ot heroin in thier stomach (WHICH HAPPENS ABOUT 100 TIMES A DAY), and send those people for an X-ray.

And once again it is a power granted to Customs Inspectors by the Continental Congress!!!
