I'd be more in favor of less foreign aid spending before military cuts. But we need to see cuts in every department ... even changing the retirement age.

Yea there is certainly no waste in the Military, keep those 700 foreign bases supplied and manned.. Keep up the Afghanistan Fiasco.. keep up the General and Admiral Mentor Programs.. the military has the biggest waste in the Federal Government..

What I think actually this points out is (i) how disingenuous the Republicans' notion of small government is and (ii) how the common view of "left" and "right" in the US is sorely lacking. There's no place on the left/right continuum for people who truly want small government, since both parties want big government -- they just want the government to be big in different ways.

Icy -- agree with part of this, as it's not either/or. We simply don't need the worldwide military presence we have. Cut foreign aid, cut the military, cut everything -- I'm skeptical there's any area of the Federal government that can't be cut by some amount that would mean real dollars (albeit a small %).

Not exactly true. The military is tremendously wasteful as it is, but it does have rivals in Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid/Welfare.

The military is being cut dramatically in a self imposed fashion already. But more needs to be done. We have ten times the "flag" officers now than we did at the height of WWII, along with their staffs. Yet the military has less than 1/5 the men to supervise. Additionally, there are "Pet Programs" that the military does not want or need, yet Congress keeps funding to keep that plant open in their district. These are low hanging fruits to trim immediately without impacting boots on the ground.

As far as the Afghanistan comment, there is a bigass hole in the ground in New York city that begs to differ with you.

We are making such a huge impact in Afghanistan, the only difference is that Karzai is walking around with 52 million of your tax dollars in his pockets..
