What I don't get is why he presumes it's important enough to devote a column to. He's being publicly self-important about a personal matter that has nothing to do with sports. I would have respected him more for simply being who he is without shoving it in the readers' faces. Who cares?

6 of one half dozen of another, on one hand do not really care, but on the other it would seem to be important to him... is it newsworthy, apparently his editor thinks so.

Suspect that those who know if him, already know and do not really care..

As far as the locker room stuff goes, probably not a big deal, there are in all probability a few of more either on the interview side or the interviewee side..

When I first saw this thread, I was in total agreement with you. Seemed like an attention whore move.

But upon reading the column, I understand why he did it. It wasn't about him telling everyone so much as him no longer continuing to hide that fact about him. The fact that he thought about writing this column for over 7 years before actually doing it suggests it wasn't just a knee-jerk thing for attention.

And without going into politics here, male sports are one area where gay people haven't gained much acceptance compared to the rest of North America. It may actually be more detrimental to his career than anything due to the prejudices of a portion of fans and players.

He is a high profile media member in Boston, so maybe he's in a relationship where he's having to explain too much to too many far more frequently than he would like. If it's out in the open, then people know and it's no bother to him anymore.

lol...In a round about way it does. He's a baseball guy that when on EEI constantly steers any Patriot talk back towards the Sox.

He would rather talk about the 67 RS than discuss positives about the 2010 Pats. I do however give him props for coming out.

It is a tough world out their for writers.
I never knew who Inez Sainz was until she trotted around the Jets locker room. Now I can pick her derriere out of a line up.
I never heard of this Buckley gentleman, but now he will be a topic on messageboards and other forums.
Some publicity is better than none at all. He wants to tell us he's gay? That's up to him and the lifestyle he lives....not that there's anything wrong with it.
